The ''Workplace Relations Act 1996'' was an Australian law regarding workplace conditions and rights passed by the Howard government after it came into power in 1996. It replaced the previous Labor Government's ''Industrial Relations Act 1988'', and commenced operation on 1 January 1997. In 2005, the Howard government passed the '' Workplace Relations Amendment Act 2005'' which came into effect on 27 March 2006 and substantially amended the original Act, bringing in the ''WorkChoices'' changes to Australian labour law. Maritime Union Of Australia
The Maritime Union of Australia (MUA) was a union which covered waterside workers, seafarers, port workers, professional divers, and office workers associated with Australian ports. The MUA was formed in 1993 with merger of the Seamen's Union of Australia and the Waterside Workers' Federation of Australia. In 2017 the MUA had about 16,000 members. It was affiliated with the Australian Council of Trade Unions, the Australian Labor Party and the International Transport Workers Federation. From 2000 until its merger in 2018, Paddy Crumlin was National Secretary of the MUA and since 2010 he has been President of the ITF. He also holds the position of chair of the Dockers Section. Anthony North
Anthony Max North is a retired Australian judge, who served as a Judge of the Federal Court of Australia from 3 October 1995 until 11 September 2018. He held appointments as a Judge of the Supreme Court of the Australian Capital Territory and the Industrial Relations Court of Australia. North graduated as Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Arts from the University of Melbourne. In 1973 he served as associate to Sir Ninian Stephen, then a Judge of the High Court of Australia. He graduated as Master of Laws from the University of London in 1975. In 1976 he was admitted to the Victorian Bar. He held the part-time statutory appointment as Defence Force Advocate between 1993 and 1995. He retired from the Court in September 2018.
