Patrick Ryan (English Author)
Patrick Ryan (1916–1989) was an English author whose best-known work, the satirical war novel ''How I Won The War'', was made into a 1967 film of the same name directed by Richard Lester. Biography Patrick Ryan was born in Newport, on the Isle of Wight in 1916 to a family of Irish origin. He was educated at The Haberdashers' Aske's Boys' School. On the outbreak of war in 1939 he enlisted in the Royal Warwickshire Regiment, was commissioned as an officer, and then transferred to The Fourth Regiment of the Reconnaissance Corps of the Royal Armoured Corps. He served in North Africa, Italy, and Greece. He moved to Leeds in the 1950s as Assistant Head Postmaster, and his "apprenticeship" in adapting to Yorkshire life is related in his humorous memoir ''How I Became A Yorkshireman'', published in the late 1960s. Patrick Ryan (Irish Politician)
Patrick Ryan (16 November 1898 – 21 January 1944), also known as Paddy Ryan Lacken, was an Irish nationalist and politician. He was born in Newport, County Tipperary. Ryan became active in the Irish War of Independence in Limerick and Tipperary, serving as Captain in the C Company of the 6th Battalion, Tipperary No. 1 Brigade, 3rd South Division of the Irish Republican Army, IRA. He took the Anglo-Irish Treaty, Anti-Treaty side in the Irish Civil War, and was arrested by Pro-Treaty forces in 1923. In his Civil War memoir ''The Gates Flew Open'', Peadar O'Donnell describes an incident where Ryan, under sentence of execution, was mistakenly transferred to Harepark Camp in the Curragh. When the order came to hand him over, he was kept hidden by his fellow prisoners. Patrick Kevin Ryan (born March 28, 1982) is an American businessman and Democratic politician serving as the U.S. representative for since 2022. He previously served as the county executive of Ulster County, New York. Early life and career Ryan was born and raised in Kingston, New York, the son of Patricia L. and Kevin M. Ryan. Patrick John Ryan (February 20, 1831 – February 11, 1911) was an Irish-born prelate of the Catholic Church. He served as the second Archbishop of Philadelphia from 1884 until his death in 1911. Early life and education Patrick Ryan was born in Thurles, County Tipperary, to Jeremiah and Mary Ryan. He received his early education from the Christian Brothers at Thurles, and attended a private school in Dublin from 1842 to 1847. In 1844, he led a delegation of students to Richmond Bridewell Prison, where he delivered an address to the imprisoned Daniel O'Connell. He completed his theological studies at Carlow College in 1852, his education supported by '' The Foreign Mission Fund'', and was ordained a subdeacon. Patrick Joseph "Paddy" Ryan (1904 – 1969), an Australian Catholic priest and anti-communist organiser, was born in Albury, New South Wales in 1904. He was ordained as a priest in the order of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart in 1929. After gaining a doctorate in Rome, he returned to Australia and for many years taught philosophy at the order's seminary in Kensington, New South Wales. His philosophy was strictly neo-scholastic and he vigorously debated the atheist philosophers of Sydney University. Patrick Ryan (Irish Priest)
Patrick Ryan is an Irish Catholic priest who left the Pallottine order in 1973 after refusing a transfer to a parish church in England. In 1988 Ryan was accused by British authorities of involvement in Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA) activity, and was the subject of two unsuccessful extradition requests. Ryan denied the accusation in an interview with ''The Tipperary Star'', saying that he had raised money both inside and outside Europe for victims on the nationalist side in the Troubles of Northern Ireland. But Ryan insisted that he had "never bought explosives for the IRA or anybody else", and had never been requested by the paramilitary group to do so. In an interview with the BBC broadcast in 2019, Ryan admitted that he was "one hundred percent" involved in IRA bomb-making.
