Patricia Stilwell Walker is an American philatelist who signed the Roll of Distinguished Philatelists in 2022. She won the 2006 Lichtenstein Medal for her contributions to philately. Philately (; ) is the study of postage stamps and postal history. It also refers to the collection and appreciation of stamps and other philatelic products. Philately involves more than just stamp collecting or the study of postage; it is possible to be a philatelist without owning any stamps. For instance, the stamps being studied may be very rare or reside only in museums. Etymology The word "philately" is the English transliteration of the French "", coined by Georges Herpin in 1864. Roll Of Distinguished Philatelists
The Roll of Distinguished Philatelists (RDP) is a Philately, philatelic award of international scale, created by the Philatelic Congress of Great Britain in 1921. The Roll consists of five pieces of parchment to which the signatories add their names. Selection of the signatories Those who have assisted the development of philately through their research, expertise or giving their time can be candidates to sign the Roll if they are sponsored by one of the existing signatories. Lichtenstein Medal
The Lichtenstein Medal, also known as the ''Alfred F. Lichtenstein Memorial Award for Distinguished Service to Philately'' is given annually to a living individual for outstanding service to philately. Origin The Lichtenstein Medal was established by the Collectors Club of New York in 1952 in honor of noted philatelist Alfred Lichtenstein (philatelist), Alfred F. Lichtenstein (1876-1947). The Lichtenstein Medal is similar in importance in philately with the Lindenberg Medal awarded by the Berliner Philatelisten-Klub of Germany for investigations and contributions to philatelic literature. Luff Award
The Luff Award is awarded by the American Philatelic Society (commonly known as the APS) for meritorious contributions to philately by living philatelists. Established The award was established in 1940 in memory of John N. Luff, distinguished philatelist and president of the APS from 1907 to 1909. Basis of the award The recipient of the award must be a living philatelist. A philatelic exhibition is an exhibition of Philately, stamps and postal history where stamp collectors (philatelists) compete for medals.
