Pathfinder School
The United States Army Pathfinder (military), Pathfinder School trains personnel in the United States Army, U.S. Army and its sister services to set up parachute drop zones and helicopter landing zones for Airborne forces, airborne and air assault missions. The school's three-week course trains pathfinder candidates to navigate on foot; establish and operate a helicopter landing zone; establish and operate parachute drop zones (DZs), including computed air release system (CARP) DZs, ground marked release system (GMRS) DZs and Army verbally initiated release system (VIRS) DZs; conduct Cargo hook (helicopter), sling load operations; and provide air traffic control (ATC) and navigational assistance to rotary wing (RW) and fixed wing (FW) airborne operations. A drop zone (DZ) is a place where parachutists or parachuted supplies land. It can be an area targeted for landing by paratroopers, or a base from which recreational parachutists and skydivers take off in aircraft and land under parachutes.
