Pat Martin (photographer)
Pat Martin is an American photographer, based in Los Angeles. In 2019 he won the Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize for portraits of his mother. Life and work Martin grew up in Mar Vista near Venice Beach, West Los Angeles, California. His mother struggled with addiction throughout Martin's life. Knowing that she did not have long to live, from 2016 to 2018 he used portraiture to reconnect with her before her death. That series, titled ''Goldie (Mother),'' was described by Sean O'Hagan in ''The Observer'' as "searingly honest portraits that, even without the narrative behind them, have an emotional heft rare in contemporary photography." Since 2016 Martin's photography has also been of other family members. Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize
The Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize is an annual photographic portrait prize awarded by the National Portrait Gallery in London. It was established in 2003 as the Schweppes Photographic Portrait Prize. In the years 2006 and 2007 it was referred to simply as the Photographic Portrait Prize. In 2008 the name of the new sponsors, Taylor Wessing, was prepended to the prize name. Taylor Wessing's relationship with the Gallery began in 2005 with their sponsorship of The World's Most Photographed. The prize is an open competition accepting submissions from amateur and professional photographers from anywhere. From about 6,000 submissions, 60 photographs are selected for exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery between November and February. A shortlist of usually four photographers receives prizes which in 2012 were: £12,000 for first; £3,000 for second; £2,000 for third; and £1,000 for fourth. Mar Vista, Los Angeles
Mar Vista is a neighborhood on the Westside of Los Angeles, California. In 1927, Mar Vista became the 70th community to be annexed to Los Angeles. It was designated as an official city neighborhood in 2006. History Mar Vista was called Ocean Park Heights from 1904 to 1924. Ocean Park Heights developed along a rail line - the Venice Short Line from downtown Los Angeles to Venice Beach - built in 1902 (present day Venice Boulevard). In 1927, Mar Vista became the 70th community to be annexed to Los Angeles. The neighborhood experienced massive growth in the 1950's through the 1970's. The area north of Venice Boulevard was filled in with suburban single-family development, including many surviving examples of mid-century modern residential architecture along Beethoven, Meier, and Moore street. Venice is a neighborhood of the city of Los Angeles within the Westside region of Los Angeles County, California. Venice was founded by Abbot Kinney in 1905 as a seaside resort town. Addiction
Addiction is a neuropsychological disorder characterized by a persistent and intense urge to engage in certain behaviors, one of which is the usage of a drug, despite substantial harm and other negative consequences. Repetitive drug use often alters brain function in ways that perpetuate craving, and weakens (but does not completely negate) self-control. This phenomenon – drugs reshaping brain function – has led to an understanding of addiction as a brain disorder with a complex variety of psychosocial as well as neurobiological (and thus involuntary) factors that are implicated in addiction's development. Sean O'Hagan (journalist)
Sean O'Hagan is an Irish writer for ''The Guardian'' and ''The Observer'', his specialty being photography. Early life and education O'Hagan was brought up in Armagh, Northern Ireland, during "The Troubles", and has written about the experience. As an undergraduate, he studied English in London. Career He began his media career as a writer for '' NME'', ''The Face'' and ''Arena'', and during this period became interested in photography. As of 2013, he is one of six regular "Art and design" critics for ''The Guardian'' website, and the only photography critic among the six. The Observer
''The Observer'' is a British newspaper published on Sundays. National Portrait Gallery, London
The National Portrait Gallery (NPG) is an art gallery in London housing a collection of portraits of historically important and famous British people. It was arguably the first national public gallery dedicated to portraits in the world when it opened in 1856. The gallery moved in 1896 to its current site at St Martin's Place, off Trafalgar Square, and adjoining the National Gallery. It has been expanded twice since then.
