Patrick Kavanagh (21 October 1904 – 30 November 1967) was an Irish poet and novelist. His best-known works include the novel '' Tarry Flynn'', and the poems "On Raglan Road" and "The Great Hunger". He is known for his accounts of Irish life through reference to the everyday and commonplace. Life and work Early life Patrick Kavanagh was born in rural Inniskeen, County Monaghan, in 1904, the fourth of ten children of James Kavanagh and Bridget Quinn. His grandfather was a schoolteacher called "Kevany", which a local priest changed to " Kavanagh" at his baptism. The grandfather had to leave the area following a scandal and never taught in a national school again, but married and raised a family in Tullamore. Patrick Kavanagh (police Officer)
Patrick Bernard Kavanagh (18 March 1923 – 11 December 2013) was a senior British police officer. Kavanagh was educated at St. Aloysius' College, Glasgow. He served in the Rifle Brigade from 1941 to 1943 and the Parachute Regiment from 1943 to 1946, ending his service as a Lieutenant. In 1946, he joined the Manchester City Police as a Constable. He rose through the ranks to Superintendent, and in 1964 was appointed Assistant Chief Constable of Cardiff City Police. When it amalgamated to form South Wales Constabulary in 1969 he became ACC of the new force and was promoted Deputy Chief Constable in 1972. On 1 January 1974, he was appointed Assistant Commissioner "B" (Traffic) in the Metropolitan Police and was awarded the Queen's Police Medal (QPM) in the 1974 New Year Honours. Pat Kavanagh (born March 14, 1979) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey right winger who played in the National Hockey League (NHL) for the Vancouver Canucks and Philadelphia Flyers. Playing career Kavanagh was drafted in the 2nd round, 50th overall, by the Philadelphia Flyers in the 1997 NHL Entry Draft. On January 31, 2007, Kavanagh signed with the HV71 of the Elitserien for the rest of the 2006–07 season after having played the early part of the season for SaiPa of the SM-liiga and two games with the Portland Pirates of the AHL. Life and work Kavanagh was born in 1940 in Durban, South Africa, where her father was a journalist before and after his service as a fighter pilot in the SAAF during the Second World War. Her mother, Olive (née Le Roux), was a pioneering public health inspector. Her half-sister, Julie Kavanagh, is a ballet critic. Patrick Kavanagh (born 29 December 1985 in Dublin) is an Irish footballer who plays as a winger for League of Ireland Premier Division club Bohemians. Career Early career Kavanagh's first clubs were St Joseph's Boys and Ballybrack Boys, where his talent was soon spotted by scouts. He signed for League of Ireland club Bohemians in 2004 but his opportunities at the club were restricted to appearances in the Gypsies' Under 21 side. Patrick Kavanagh (born 10 November 1945) is an Irish former hurler. He enjoyed a 20-year club career, lining out with Rower–Inistioge, University College Dublin and Borris–Ileigh, and was also a member of the Kilkenny senior hurling team. Career Kavanagh first played hurling as a schoolboy with Good Counsel College in New Ross. He later studied at University College Dublin and won two Fitzgibbon Cup medals and a Dublin SHC title during his tenure there. Kavanagh began his club career by winning a Kilkenny JHC title with Rower-Inistioge in 1963 before later winning a Kilkenny SHC title in 1968. Patrick Kavanagh (born 1952) is an Irish former Gaelic footballer and hurler. At club level he played with Blackrock and St. Michael's and was also a member of the Cork senior football team. Career Kavanagh first played hurling at juvenile and underage levels with Blackrock. He was part of the club's minor team that won three successive Cork MHC titles from 1967 to 1969. Kavanagh subsequently joined the Blackrock senior team and was part of three All-Ireland SCHC-winning teams. His performances at underage club level earned a call-up to the Cork minor hurling team and, after losing the 1968 All-Ireland minor final to Wexford, went on to secure consecutive All-Ireland MHC titles in 1969 and as team captain in 1970. Patrick Joseph Kavanagh (2 September 1929 — 20 August 2015) was an Irish rugby union player and swimmer. Born in Dublin, Kavanagh was educated at Blackrock College and University College Dublin (UCD). Kavanagh, a freestyle specialist, received his swimming tuition from Irish diving champion Eddie Heron. He was a five-time winner of the 100 metres freestyle at the Irish Championships and qualified for the 1948 Summer Olympics. After travelling to London for the Olympics, Kavanagh and his teammates were forced to withdraw at the last minute when the International Swimming Federation barred two of their squad from competing as they were from the north. Threat Signal is a Canadian heavy metal band from Hamilton, Ontario. The band has had numerous lineup changes, with only Jon Howard remaining from the original incarnation. The Wexford Martyrs were Matthew Lambert, Robert Myler, Edward Cheevers, Patrick Cavanagh (Irish: Pádraigh Caomhánach), John O'Lahy, and another martyr whose name is unknown. In 1581, they were found guilty of treason for aiding in the escape of James Eustace, 3rd Viscount Baltinglass; for refusing to take the Oath of Supremacy which declared Elizabeth I of England to be the head of the Church; and for conveying a Jesuit and other Catholic priests and laymen out of Ireland.
