Pat Collins (showman)
Patrick Collins (12 May 1859 – 9 December 1943) was a Liberal MP for Walsall (1922–1924) and Mayor of Walsall (1938), but he is chiefly remembered for his involvement in the fairgrounds industry; in fact, the "Pat Collins Funfairs" company still bears his name. He was also an early presenter of moving pictures, both in travelling shows and in cinemas. At one point, he was running four separate fairs a week and owned thirteen cinemas and several skating rinks.Oxford Dictionary of National Biography retrieved 21-09-2008 Life Collins was born 12 May 1859 at a fairground in Chester. He was one of five children born to John Collins, an agricultural labourer of Irish descent. 1922 United Kingdom General Election
The 1922 United Kingdom general election was held on Wednesday 15 November 1922. It was won by the Conservative Party, led by Bonar Law, which gained an overall majority over the Labour Party, led by J. R. Clynes, and a divided Liberal Party. This election is considered one of political realignment, with the Liberal Party falling to third-party status. The Conservative Party went on to spend all but eight of the next forty-two years as the largest party in Parliament, and Labour emerged as the main competition to the Conservatives. The election was the first not to be held in Southern Ireland, due to the signing of the Anglo-Irish Treaty on 6 December 1921, under which Southern Ireland was to secede from the United Kingdom as a Dominion – the Irish Free State – on 6 December 1922. Sir Richard Cooper, 2nd Baronet
Sir Richard Ashmole Cooper, 2nd Baronet (11 August 1874 – 5 March 1946) was a British politician and a member of the Cooper Baronets, of Shenstone Court. Biography Cooper was educated at Clifton College, and succeeded to the baronetcy in 1913. He was Chairman of the chemical manufacturing firm Cooper, McDougall & Robertson. He served in the Staffordshire Yeomanry (Queen's Own Royal Regiment), where he was appointed a lieutenant 26 March 1902. He was elected as Member of Parliament (MP) for Walsall in January 1910 general election, a seat he would hold until 1922. He founded the National Party with Sir Henry Page Croft in 1917 but stood at the 1918 election as an Independent Conservative. He was prominent, along with Croft, in the campaign against the Prime Minister David Lloyd George in July 1922 for selling honours. William Preston (UK Politician)
William Preston (February 1874 - 22 November 1941) was a British industrialist and Conservative politician. Biography Born in 1874, Preston was educated at Walsall Grammar School and Weston School, Bath. In 1907 he married Lilly Swinton Sanders, and he became managing director of William Sanders & Co (Wednesbury) Limited, a major manufacturer of electrical switching equipment. He played cricket for Staffordshire in the Minor Counties Championship, making one appearance in 1901 against Northamptonshire and another in 1911, against Lincolnshire. At the 1924 general election, Preston was chosen as Conservative candidate for the Walsall constituency. He unseated the sitting Liberal MP, Patrick Collins. However, following his election, it was discovered that Preston had received payments for two small contracts to supply electrical fittings to the Post Office stores department.
