Pastena Caves
The Pastena Caves (Italian: ''Grotte di Pastena'') are a karst cave system located in the municipality of Pastena, in the province of Frosinone, Lazio. Overview The caves were discovered in 1926 by Carlo Franchetti and were opened for tourism one year later. They belong to the "Consorzio Grotte Pastena e Collepardo" . The site, situated 4.5 km out of the town of Pastena, on the road to Castro dei Volsci (close to the ''frazioni'' of Casanova-Cavatelle and Collevento), is divided into 2 sections: the "active" inferior and the "fossile" superior. The second one is so named due to the fact that the process of dripping (from stalactites to stalagmites) has not been active in several millennia. Stalagmite
A stalagmite (, ; from the Greek , from , "dropping, trickling") is a type of rock formation that rises from the floor of a cave due to the accumulation of material deposited on the floor from ceiling drippings. Stalagmites are typically composed of calcium carbonate, but may consist of lava, mud, peat, pitch, sand, sinter, and amberat (crystallized urine of pack rats). The corresponding formation hanging down from the ceiling of a cave is a stalactite. Collepardo is a ''comune'' (municipality) in the Province of Frosinone in the Italian region Lazio, located about east of Rome and about north of Frosinone. History The presence of ancient polygonal walls ("Pelasgic Walls") testifies the human presence in the area since ancient times, although the current settlement was likely founded in the 6th century CE during the reign of Theodoric the Great. Postojna Cave
Postojna Cave ( sl, Postojnska jama; german: Adelsberger Grotte; it, Grotte di Postumia) is a long karst cave system near Postojna, southwestern Slovenia. It is the second-longest cave system in the country (following the Migovec System) as well as one of its top tourism sites. The caves were created by the Pivka River. History The cave was first described in the 17th century by the pioneer of study of karst phenomena, Johann Weikhard von Valvasor, although graffiti inside dated to 1213 indicates a much longer history of use. In 1818, when the cave was being prepared for a visit by Francis I, the first Emperor of the Austria-Hungary, a new area of the cave was discovered accidentally by Luka Čeč, a local man in charge of lighting lamps in the cave. Paolo Villaggio
Paolo Villaggio (; 30 December 1932 – 3 July 2017) was an Italian actor, voice actor, writer, director and comedian. He is noted for the characters he created with paradoxical and grotesque characteristics: Professor Kranz, the ultra-timid Giandomenico Fracchia, and the obsequious and meek accountant Ugo Fantozzi, perhaps the favourite character in Italian comedy. He wrote several books, usually of satirical character. He also acted in dramatic roles, and appeared in several movies. Neri Parenti (born 26 April 1950, in Florence) is an Italian film director and writer. He is known for comedy films, including the series starring Paolo Villaggio playing the character Ugo Fantozzi, and a later series of '' cinepanettoni'' - zany comedy films scheduled for release during the Christmas period. Biography After graduating in political science, he dedicated his career to filmmaking. He became a pupil and assistant of Pasquale Festa Campanile from 1972 to 1979, and also worked for Salvatore Samperi, Steno and Giorgio Capitani. In 1979 he directed his first film, '' The Face with Two Left Feet'', an ironic and comical parody of '' Saturday Night Fever'' with John Travolta, which had been a hit two years earlier.
