Past Present (John Scofield Album)
''Past Present'' is an album by jazz guitarist John Scofield that was recorded in March and released in September of 2015. Scofield is joined by saxophonist Joe Lovano, bassist Larry Grenadier and drummer Bill Stewart. This album reunited Scofield with Lovano and Stewart, who had been members of his quartet on '' Meant to Be'' (1991) and '' What We Do'' (1993). Lovano had also appeared on '' Time on My Hands'' (1990) and '' Oh!'' (under the group name “ScoLoHoFo”). The album earned Scofield a Grammy Award for Best Jazz Instrumental Album. The title track was nominated for Best Improvised Jazz Solo Grammy. John Scofield
John Scofield (born December 26, 1951), sometimes referred to as "Sco", is an American guitarist and composer whose music over a long career has blended jazz, jazz fusion, funk, blues, soul and rock. He first came to mainstream attention in the band of Miles Davis, and has toured and recorded with many prominent jazz artists, including saxophonists Eddie Harris, Dave Liebman, Joe Henderson and Joe Lovano; keyboardists George Duke, Joey DeFrancesco, Herbie Hancock, Larry Goldings and Robert Glasper; fellow guitarists Pat Metheny, John Abercrombie, Pat Martino and Bill Frisell; bassists Marc Johnson and Jaco Pastorius; and drummer Billy Cobham and Dennis Chambers. What We Do
''What We Do'' is a studio album by jazz guitarist John Scofield, the second to be released as the John Scofield Quartet. It was recorded in May of 1992 and released the following year on Blue Note. The quartet features saxophonist Joe Lovano, bassist Dennis Irwin (replacing Marc Johnson) and drummer Bill Stewart. Jazz
Jazz is a music genre that originated in the African-American communities of New Orleans, Louisiana in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with its roots in blues and ragtime. Since the 1920s Jazz Age, it has been recognized as a major form of musical expression in traditional and popular music. Bill Stewart (musician)
William Harris Stewart (born October 18, 1966, in Des Moines, Iowa) is an American jazz drummer. He has performed with Maceo Parker, John Scofield, Joe Lovano, Michael Brecker, Pat Metheny, Lonnie Smith, Nicholas Payton, Bill Carrothers, Steve Wilson, Seamus Blake, Larry Goldings and Peter Bernstein, and Jim Hall. Biography Bill Stewart's father was a trombonist, and his first and middle names are a tribute to jazz trombonist Bill Harris. Stewart grew up in Des Moines, Iowa, listening to his parents' jazz and rhythm and blues records without much exposure to live jazz in the then relatively isolated state of Iowa. The largely self-taught drummer began playing at the age of seven. Larry Grenadier
Larry Grenadier (born February 6, 1966 in San Francisco) is an American jazz double bassist. Early life Grenadier's father, Albert, was a trumpet player, and his two brothers, Phil and Steve, play trumpet and guitar, respectively. Grenadier began on trumpet when he was 10 years old before beginning to play the bass the following year. Grenadier's father helped introduce him to the instruments and music theory. Larry's older brother Phil began listening to jazz around this time, influencing his sibling's musical interests. Grenadier began listening to several jazz bassists including Ray Brown, Charles Mingus, Richard Davis, Paul Chambers, Wilbur Ware and Oscar Pettiford, among others.
