Passauer Eisenbahnfreunde
The Passauer Eisenbahnfreunde (Passau Railway Society) or PEF is a German railway society with the aim of preserving historic railway vehicles in working order in order to operate them. The society was founded in 1978 in Passau. In 2007 it had about 190 members and is registered as a limited company (''e. V.''). Vehicles All vehicles belonging to the society are maintained and repaired by volunteer mechanics in their free time. The inspections and certifications are carried out by independent experts in order to guarantee operating safety. Traction units Railbuses The society owns two Class 798 railbuses, an associated VB 98 centre car and a VS 98 driving car. Apart from one power car, all parts of the multiple unit have passed their general inspection and may therefore operate on networks owned by DB AG, ČD, Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) and other companies. Departmental Wagon
Departmental vehicles, also called departmental wagons or engineering vehicles, are special railway vehicles used to support the engineering functions of the railway.Ellis, Iain (2006). Bavarian Forest Railway
The Bavarian Forest Railway (''Bayerische Waldbahn'' often just called the ''Waldbahn'') () links the heart of the Bavarian Forest around Regen and Zwiesel to Plattling and the Danube valley on one side, and the Czech Republic through Bayerisch Eisenstein on the other. In the Danube valley it forms a junction with the Nuremberg–Regensburg–Passau long-distance railway (KBSKBS stands for ''Kursbuchstrecke'' or 'timetable route'; the KBS numbers are the route numbers given in the official railway timetables 880) and, to the south, regional lines to Landshut and Munich (KBS 931). Vilshofen–Aidenbach Railway
The Vilshofen (Niederb)–Aidenbach railway was a German branch line in the state of Bavaria which opened on 21 November 1898. Passenger traffic ceased in 1962 and all services were withdrawn in 1988. The line was then dismantled. Planning and construction Originally there were plans in which Aidenbach was seen as the crossing station on a line from Vilshofen via Aidenbach to Pfarrkirchen. The railway from Landau an der Isar to Kröhstorf was to be extended to Aidenbach. In that way a local railway network and diversionary route would have been achieved. On 6 January 1883 a meeting took place in Aidenbach, which discussed the construction of a railway from Vilshofen via Aidenbach to Pfarrkirchen. This had been set up by the ''Gutsinspektor'' of the Aretin estates in Haidenburg, Baron von Hafenbrädl. Deggendorf–Kalteneck Railway
The Deggendorf–Kalteneck railway linked the railway line running through the Bavarian Forest from Plattling via Zwiesel to Bayerisch Eisenstein with the Ilz Valley railway (''Ilztalbahn'') from Passau via Waldkirchen to Freyung. In keeping with the naming of the Bavarian Forest railway or ''Waldbahn'' from Plattling to Bayerisch Eisenstein, it was called the ''Vorwaldbahn'' (lit: pre-Forest railway). The Passau–Erlau–Hauzenberg railway is a single-tracked branch line in the Regensburg railway division with a branch to Erlau–Obernzell(–Wegscheid), which was partially operated as rack railway using the Strub rack system.
