"Party Line" is the opening track from the Kinks' 1966 album, '' Face to Face''. The songwriting is credited to Ray Davies. On one of the earliest covers of the album (CVPV 76032.30), the song is credited R.Davies - D.Davies. Background On every release of "Party Line", the song is said to be written by Ray Davies, the main songwriter of the Kinks. However, in his critically acclaimed autobiography ''Kink'', Dave Davies (who also sang "Party Line") claimed that he had written the song rather than Ray. Dave Davies has said, "On 'Party Line' I got really stuck for lyrics; I just didn't know what to write. The Kinks
The Kinks were an English rock band formed in Muswell Hill, north London, in 1963 by brothers Ray and Dave Davies. They are regarded as one of the most influential rock bands of the 1960s. David Russell Gordon Davies (born 3 February 1947) is an English guitarist, singer and songwriter. He was the lead guitarist and backing vocalist for the English rock band the Kinks, which also featured his elder brother Ray Davies. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990 as a member of the Kinks. Davies is prolific with his innovative nature on the electric guitar, specifically in being one of the first to utilize electric guitar distortion and exposing the effect to the mainstream. A party line (multiparty line, shared service line, party wire) is a local loop telephone circuit that is shared by multiple telephone service subscribers. Party line systems were widely used to provide telephone service, starting with the first commercial switchboards in 1878. A majority of Bell System subscribers in the mid-20th century in the United States and Canada were served by party lines, which had a discount over individual service. During wartime shortages, these were often the only available lines. British users similarly benefited from the party line discount. Dead End Street (song)
"Dead End Street" is a song by the British band the Kinks from 1966, written by main songwriter Ray Davies. Like many other songs written by Davies, it is to some degree influenced by British Music Hall. The bass playing was partly inspired by the "twangy" sound of Duane Eddy's guitar. It was originally released as a non-album single, but has since been included as one of several bonus tracks from the '' Face to Face'' CD.
