The Mauritian Socialist Party (, PSM) was a political party in Mauritius. History The ''Parti Socialiste Mauricien'' (PSM) was founded by then Labour MP Harish Boodhoo on 16 September 1979 as a splinter group who were expelled from the Labour Party. The other Labour MPs who formed the party were Rohit Beedassy and Radha Gungoosingh. Other prominent members of the PSM were Jocelyn Seenyen, Armoogum Parsooraman and Kishore Deerpalsing. Prior to the formation of PSM Harish Boodhoo served as a Labour-CAM-PMSD MP from 1976 to 1979 where he repeatedly criticized actions of his own government. The main targets of his criticism were Minister of Finance Sir Veerasamy Ringadoo and two sitting ministers Lutchmeeparsad Badry (Social Security) and Gyandeo Dabee (Cooperatives). These two ministers were forced to resign in May 1979 following a commission of enquiry which was initiated in 1978 to address corruption allegations. Militant Socialist Movement
The Militant Socialist Movement (french: Mouvement Socialiste Militant; abbreviated MSM) is a centre-left political party in Mauritius. It is the largest single political party in the National Assembly of Mauritius, winning 42 of the 69 seats in the 2019 general elections. It also holds the largest number of seats in all city/town councils through the country with 60 councilors out of 120. The MSM is one of the three biggest political parties in the country, the others being the Labour Party (PTR) and Mouvement Militant Mauricien (MMM). Harisun Boodhoo more commonly known as Harish Boodhoo, (born in Belle Terre, Vacoas-Phoenix, Mauritius on 12 September 1946) is a Mauritian political figure who served as Deputy Prime Minister of Mauritius from 11 June 1982 to 21 August 1983. He was elected Member of Parliament (MP) in 1976, 1982 and 1983 in Rivière des Anguilles and Souillac (Constituency No. 13). Early life and education Boodhoo attended the Camp Fouqueraux primary school and completed his School Certificate at Mauritius College, Curepipe. He worked as a labourer before attending Teachers’ Training College. He then worked as a school teacher. The Labour Party (french: Parti Travailliste, PTr) is a centre-left social-democratic political party in Mauritius. Armoogum Parsooraman (born in 1951), also known as ''Armoogum Parsooramen'' is a Mauritian politician, social worker and former minister. Early life, education & career Armoogum Parsooraman grew up with his 6 brothers and 4 sisters in Cap Malheureux, a historic village located on the northern coast of Mauritius. His father Vela was a vegetable grower and his mother Rookoo was illiterate. Sir Veerasamy Ringadoo, GCMG, GCSK, QC, (born Vīracāmi Riṅkāṭu; 20 October 1920 – 9 September 2000) was a Mauritian politician, minister, the sixth and last governor-general of Mauritius from 1986 to 1992, and then the first president of Mauritius from March to June 1992. Mouvement Militant Mauricien
The Mouvement Militant Mauricien (MMM) ( en, Mauritian Militant Movement) is a left-wing socialist political party in Mauritius. The party was formed by a group of students in the late 1960s. The MMM advocates what it sees as a "fairer" society, without discrimination on the basis of social class, race, community, caste, religion, gender or sexual orientation. In the general election of 2014, the MMM became the second largest party in the National Assembly of Mauritius with 12 Members of Parliament, and the second largest party at the municipal level, with 4 councillors. 1982 Mauritian General Election
General elections were held in Mauritius on 11 June 1982. 360 candidates representing 22 parties contested the election, the result of which was a landslide victory for the Mauritian Militant Movement– Mauritian Socialist Party alliance, which won all 60 of the directly elected mainland seats. The voting system involved twenty constituencies on Mauritius, which each elected three members. Two seats were elected by residents of Rodrigues, and up to eight seats were filled by the "best losers", although following this election, only four "best loser" seats were awarded.
