Parr (artist)
Parr (1893 - 3 November 1969) was an Inuit artist. He lived a traditional Inuit lifestyle until 1961, when he settled in Cape Dorset because of declining health and a hunting accident. Biography Parr was born in 1893 on Southern Baffin Island, near Cape Dorset, Northwest Territories (now Nunavut). He had two sons, Nuna Parr and Peter Parr, who are also artists. His wife, Eleeshushe Parr, was also an Inuit artist. Work In Cape Dorset, Parr began to draw and make stonecut relief prints. He created over 2,000 works in the next eight years. These are mainly images of hunting scenes, although Shamanic subjects are also depicted. In 1977 one of his prints was featured on a Canadian postage stamp. Inuit Art
Inuit art, also known as Eskimo art, refers to artwork produced by Inuit, that is, the people of the Arctic previously known as Eskimos, a term that is now often considered offensive. Historically, their preferred medium was walrus ivory, but since the establishment of southern markets for Inuit art in 1945, prints and figurative works carved in relatively soft stone such as soapstone, serpentinite, or argillite have also become popular. The Winnipeg Art Gallery has the largest public collection of contemporary Inuit art in the world. In 2007, the Museum of Inuit Art opened in Toronto, but closed due to lack of resources in 2016. University Of Michigan Museum Of Art
The University of Michigan Museum of Art in Ann Arbor, Michigan with is one of the largest university art museums in the United States. Built as a war memorial in 1909 for the university's fallen alumni from the Civil War, Alumni Memorial Hall originally housed U-M's Alumni office along with the university's growing art collection. Its first director was Jean Paul Slusser, who served from 1946 (first as acting director, then becoming director in 1947) to his retirement in 1957. The university contains a comprehensive collection that represents more than 150 years of history, with over 20,000 works of art that span cultures, eras, and media. The Union List of Artist Names (ULAN) is a free online database of the Getty Research Institute using a controlled vocabulary, which by 2018 contained over 300,000 artists and over 720,000 names for them, as well as other information about artists. Among these names, one is flagged as the preferred name.
