Parliamentary Constituencies In The West Midlands (region)
The regionSee NUTS 1 statistical regions of England of West Midlands is divided into 59 parliamentary constituencies which is made up of 35 borough constituencies and 24 county constituencies. Since the general election of December 2019, 43 are represented by Conservative MPs, 15 by Labour MPs, and 1 by a Liberal Democrat MP. Following the abandonment of the Sixth Periodic Review (the 2018 review), the Boundary Commission for England formally launched the 2023 Review on 5 January 2021. Regions Of England
The regions, formerly known as the government office regions, are the highest tier of sub-national division in England, established in 1994. Between 1994 and 2011, nine regions had officially devolved functions within government. While they no longer fulfil this role, they continue to be used for statistical and some administrative purposes. While the UK was a member of the European Union, they defined areas (European Parliament constituencies in the United Kingdom, constituencies) for the purposes of elections to the European Parliament. Eurostat also used them to demarcate First level NUTS of the European Union, first level Nomenclature of Territorial Units for Statistics (NUTS) regions ("NUTS 1 regions") within the European Union, which in 2021 were superseded by International Territorial Level (ITL) regions ("ITL 1 regions"). Preet Kaur Gill ( Punjabi: ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਕੌਰ ਗਿੱਲ, born 21 November 1972) is a British politician serving as Shadow Cabinet Minister for International Development since 2020. A member of the Labour and Co-operative parties, she has been Member of Parliament (MP) for Birmingham Edgbaston since 2017. Early life Preet Kaur Gill was born on 21 November 1972 in Edgbaston, Birmingham, in the English West Midlands to Punjabi parents Daljit Singh Shergill and Kuldeep Kaur Shergill. Her father was a foreman, and later a bus driver, and her mother worked as a seamstress. Daljit Singh was the longest serving president of the Guru Nanak Gurdwara Smethwick. Gill credits her father and Baron Tarsem King of West Bromwich as her main inspirations for her ambition to enter politics. She has six younger siblings. Liam Byrne
Liam Dominic Byrne (born 2 October 1970) is a British politician serving as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Birmingham Hodge Hill since 2004. A member of the Labour Party, he served in Prime Minister Gordon Brown’s Cabinet from 2008 to 2010. Birmingham Hodge Hill (UK Parliament Constituency)
Birmingham Hodge Hill is a constituency of part of the city of Birmingham represented in the House of Commons since 2004 by Liam Byrne, a member of the Labour Party. Constituency profile The constituency covers a diverse area of east Birmingham, including the predominantly Asian inner-city area of Washwood Heath and the mostly white area of Shard End on the city's eastern boundary, as well as Hodge Hill itself. Residents have low incomes and there is roughly a three-way split of social housing, privately rented and privately owned homes, leading to one of highest Indices of Multiple Deprivation in the West Midlands for its central area. Tahir Ali (born 15 October 1971) is a British Labour politician who has served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Birmingham Hall Green since 2019. Early life Ali has previously worked for Royal Mail after securing an engineering apprenticeship at age 17. He is an active trade unionist and served as a political officer for the Communication Workers Union. Birmingham Hall Green is a parliamentary constituency in the city of Birmingham, which has been represented in the House of Commons of the UK Parliament since 2019 by Tahir Ali of the Labour Party. It has become in recent years a Labour safe seat, having the twelfth-largest majority in the UK (by percentage) with a vote share for Labour of 77.6% and majority of 62.5%, as of 2017. Paulette Hamilton
Paulette Adassa Hamilton (born ) is a British Labour politician who has been the Member of Parliament (MP) for Birmingham Erdington since 2022. She is the first black MP to represent a constituency in Birmingham. Hamilton was also a councillor on the Birmingham City Council between 2004 and 2022, representing the Handsworth Wood and later Holyhead ward. Early life and career Hamilton was born and grew up in Handsworth, West Midlands. Her parents emigrated to England from Jamaica in the 1960s as economic migrants and worked in factories. She has six siblings, and attended Wilkes Green Infant and Junior School (now William Murdoch Primary School). Birmingham City Council is the local government body responsible for the governance of the City of Birmingham in England, which has been a metropolitan district since 1974. It is the most populated local council area in the United Kingdom (excluding counties) with 101 elected councillors representing over one million people, in 69 wards.
