Parkhurst is a suburb of Rockhampton in the Rockhampton Region, Queensland, Australia. In the , Parkhurst had a population of 2,476 people. Geography Parkhurst is bounded to the north by Ramsay Creek and to the west by Ramsay Creek and then the Fitzroy River. To the south it is bounded by Limestone Creek (the creek, not the suburb) and by Rockhampton–Yeppoon Road. A section of the Bruce Highway passes through the centre of the suburb from south to north, while the North Coast railway line also passes through the suburb from south to north, to the west of the highway. The proposed Rockhampton Ring Road will pass through Parkhurst on its way to join the Bruce Highway' The Parkhurst Industrial Estate is in the south-west of the suburb, while the residential land is in the west near the river and in the north-east of the suburb. Rockhampton is a city in the Rockhampton Region of Central Queensland, Australia. The population of Rockhampton in June 2021 was 79,967, Estimated resident population, 30 June 2018. making it the fourth-largest city in the state outside of the cities of South East Queensland, and the 22nd-largest city in Australia. Today, Rockhampton is an industrial and agricultural centre of the north, and is the regional centre of Central Queensland. Rockhampton is one of the oldest cities in Queensland and in Northern Australia. Fitzroy River (Queensland)
The Fitzroy River (Darumbal: ''Toonooba'') is a river located in Central Queensland, Australia. Its catchment covers an area of , making it the largest river catchment flowing to the eastern coast of Australia. It is also the largest river basin that discharges onto the Great Barrier Reef. Course and features Formed by the confluence of the Mackenzie and Dawson rivers that drain the Expedition Range and the Carnarvon Range respectively, the Fitzroy River rises near Duaringa and flows initially north by east, then northward near the Goodedulla National Park. Glenmore Homestead is a heritage-listed homestead at Belmont Road, Parkhurst, Rockhampton Region, Queensland, Australia. It was built from to . The homestead and associated buildings once belonged to pastoral run on the Fitzroy River, seven kilometres northwest of Rockhampton, Queensland. Originally much larger at 127 square miles the current size of the property is . It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 21 October 1992. History The grazing property was originally settled in 1858 by leaseholder John Arthur McCartney. In 1860, Macartney opposed a proposal to establish a municipality for Rockhampton with a proposed area of about 225 square kilometres. Glenmore, on the northern side of the river, was as vulnerable as Gracemere Station (the proposed boundaries of the municipality included the head station and Gracemere Homestead). The Rockhampton Region is a local government area (LGA) in Central Queensland, Australia, located on the Tropic of Capricorn about north of Brisbane. ''The Morning Bulletin'' is an online newspaper servicing the city of Rockhampton and the surrounding areas of Central Queensland, Australia. From 1861 to 2020, ''The Morning Bulletin'' was published as a print edition, before then becoming an exclusively online newspaper. The final print edition was published on 27 June 2020. History The first issue of ''The Bulletin'' was launched on 9 July 1861. It is the second oldest business in Rockhampton, the oldest being the Criterion Hotel which was established in October 1860. The founder and original owner, William Hitchcock Buzacott (1831–1880, brother of Charles Hardie Buzacott), brought the press and equipment from Sydney in 1861 where he operated a small weekly paper. At the time the paper was called the Rockhampton Bulletin and was eagerly read by the town's 698 residents. Parkhurst Town Centre
Parkhurst Town Centre is a shopping centre located in the suburb of Parkhurst on the northern outskirts of Rockhampton, Queensland, Australia. The shopping centre was constructed on the corner of the Bruce Highway and Boundary Road. Due to Cyclone Marcia approvals for the construction of the complex were delayed, but land clearing of the old caravan park site was commenced in December 2014 prior to construction commencing in March 2016. The Managing Director stated that all hardware and construction items would be supplied from local businesses, with the construction creating over 150 jobs and 200 jobs when completed. The shopping centre is predicted to meet the needs of 14,000 residents in Parkhurst and surrounding suburbs. Urban Sprawl
Urban sprawl (also known as suburban sprawl or urban encroachment) is defined as "the spreading of urban developments (such as houses and shopping centers) on undeveloped land near a city." Urban sprawl has been described as the unrestricted growth in many urban areas of housing, commercial development, and roads over large expanses of land, with little concern for urban planning. In addition to describing a special form of urbanization, the term also relates to the social and environmental consequences associated with this development. Medieval suburbs suffered from loss of protection of city walls, before the advent of industrial warfare. Modern disadvantages and costs include increased travel time, transport costs, pollution, and destruction of the countryside. Rockhampton Ring Road
Rockhampton Ring Road is a proposed highway from on the Capricorn Highway south-west of to on the Bruce Highway to the north-east of Rockhampton, in Queensland, Australia. The road will be two lanes from the Capricorn Highway to a connection in (known as the West Rockhampton Connection) and four lanes from there to the Bruce Highway, including a new bridge over the Fitzroy River. It will enable through traffic to bypass the Rockhampton CBD, avoiding 19 sets of traffic signals, and will eliminate delays caused by flooding on sections of the Bruce Highway within the city. Funding and program status As at July 2022 funding of $1.065 billion has been allocated, planning is complete, and the business case is being assessed by Infrastructure Australia.
