Parker Messick
Parker C. Messick (born October 26, 2000) is an American baseball pitcher in the Cleveland Guardians organization. He played college baseball for the Florida State Seminoles. Amateur career Messick grew up in Plant City, Florida where he attended Plant City High School. He won the Wade Boggs Athletic Achievement Award during his junior year after batting .298 with four home runs as a first baseman and going 6–3 with a 1.58 ERA and 45 strikeouts as a pitcher. As a senior, Messick struck out a state-leading 125 batters with an 11–1 record and a 1.06 ERA over 86 innings and was named Florida Mr. Baseball. Messick went 1–1 with one save and a 0.77 ERA and struck out 19 batters in innings over six relief appearances during his true freshman season before it was cut short due to the coronavirus pandemic. Pitcher
In baseball, the pitcher is the player who throws ("pitches") the baseball from the pitcher's mound toward the catcher to begin each play, with the goal of retiring a batter, who attempts to either make contact with the pitched ball or draw a walk. The 2022 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft took place on July 17–19, 2022, in Los Angeles. The draft assigned amateur baseball players to Major League Baseball (MLB) teams. The Golden Spikes Award is bestowed annually to the best amateur baseball player in the United States. The award, created by USA Baseball and sponsored by the Major League Baseball Players Association, was first presented in 1978. It is given to an amateur player who best exhibits and combines "exceptional on-field ability and exemplary sportsmanship". The award is considered the most prestigious in amateur baseball. Ten winners of the Golden Spikes Award are members of the National College Baseball Hall of Fame, including Bob Horner, the inaugural winner in 1978. The designated hitter (DH) is a baseball player who bats in place of another position player, most commonly the pitcher. The position is authorized by Major League Baseball Rule 5.11.
