Pardon My French (1921 Film)
''Pardon My French'' is a lost film, lost 1921 American silent comedy film produced by Messmore Kendall and distributed by Goldwyn Pictures. It was directed by Sidney Olcott with Vivian Martin in the leading role. Plot As described in a film magazine, Polly (Martin), an ingenue with a barnstorming acting troupe, works her way back to New York City with the rest of the company on a coal barge. Bunny (Spink), who has always played butler roles, secures a position with the Hawkers, a newly rich Kansas family on Long Island, and when they are in need of a French maid secures the position for Polly. A bogus Count and Countess attempt to win the confidence of the Hawkers, but their son Zeke (Yearsley) prefers the company of Polly to that of Countess Castairs (Studiford). Mrs. Hawker (Beresford) gives a party and Polly is dressed up to act as one of the guests. After she is insulted, she leaves the house. The family jewels are stolen and Polly is arrested. Sidney Olcott
Sidney Olcott (born John Sidney Allcott, September 20, 1872 – December 16, 1949) was a Canadian-born film producer, director, actor and screenwriter. Biography Born John Sidney Allcott in Toronto, he became one of the first great directors of the Film, motion picture business. With a desire to be an actor, a young Sidney Olcott went to New York City where he worked in the theatre until 1904 when he performed as a film actor with the Biograph Studios. In 1907, Frank J. Marion and Samuel Long, with financial backing from George Kleine, formed a new motion picture company called the Kalem Studios, Kalem Company and were able to lure the increasingly successful Olcott away from Biograph. Olcott was offered the sum of ten dollars per picture and under the terms of his contract, Olcott was required to direct a minimum of one, one-reel picture of about a thousand feet every week. Ralph Yearsley
Ralph Yearsley (October 6, 1896 – December 4, 1928) was a British-born character actor who worked in Hollywood films. Early life and education Born in London, England, he was trained in a medical school, but left for the United States to pursue a career in the film industry. Career He made his motion picture debut in 1921 in a secondary but good role in the Goldwyn Pictures silent film comedy '' Pardon My French'' directed by Sidney Olcott. That same year he appeared as Saul "Little Buzzard" Hatburn in ''Tol'able David'', directed by Henry King for Inspiration Pictures. The acclaimed film was voted a Photoplay magazine's medal of honor. Grace Van Studdiford
Grace Van Studdiford (''née'' Quivey; January 8, 1873 – January 29, 1927) was an early twentieth-century American opera singer and actress. She never recorded for gramophone but made a few motion pictures. Her Broadway roles are limited as she toured all over the country. Early life Grace Quivey was born in North Manchester, Indiana to August Jane Burns and Robert E. Quivey. She had four siblings; Iva Maude Quivey, Ralph B. Quivey, Mary Quivey Gregory and Claude E. Quivey a miniature portrait artist. She made her first appearance on the stage in Chicago in ''The Black Hussar''. In 1899 she toured with Jefferson De Angelis in ''The Jolly Musketeer''. ''French maid'' was a term applied in the Victorian and early 20th century periods to a lady's maid of French nationality. A lady's maid was a senior servant who reported directly to the lady of the house, and accompanied her mistress on travel. She helped her mistress with her appearance, including make-up, hairdressing, clothing, jewellery, and shoes, and sometimes served as confidante. A French maid was considered likely to be more expert in current fashions, and was also able to apply her knowledge of the French language when travelling in Europe.
