Paradise Isle
''Paradise Isle'' is a 1937 American film directed by Arthur Greville Collins with sequences shot in American Samoa. The film was produced by Dorothy Davenport under the name "Dorothy Reid" and was released by Monogram Pictures. The film stars Mexican actress Movita Castaneda continuing her persona of a South Seas Island girl that began with ''Mutiny on the Bounty'' (1935). Plot summary Kennedy is a shipwrecked blind artist who is washed ashore on an island en route to meeting an eminent eye surgeon in Suva who is the only chance to restore his sight. He is nursed back to health by Ida, an island girl. When Kennedy is distraught that he cannot pay for the operation due to his money being lost when his ship went down, Ida obtains a valuable black pearl that sets scheming in motion on the island paradise. Arthur Greville Collins
Arthur Greville Collins (September 5, 1896 - September 1, 1980) was a British-born film director. Career Collins was born in London, and began directing for the stage, including productions of ''Fata Morgana'', ''No Man's Land'', and ''Tarnish''. In 1921, he married actress Betty Ross Clarke and accompanied her in her theatrical career in Great Britain, the United States, and Australia. In 1934 he wed Rhoda Shepherd. He moved to Los Angeles and directed some plays there, then moved into movie making as a dialogue director for Warner Bros. He worked in that capacity for two years then became a director, making several B pictures. He moved to Australia in May 1939 to make ''Seven Little Australians'' (1939) and decided to stay there. He served in the RAAF during World War II, being discharged as a squadron leader. He also was stationed as administrative officer for two years at Port Pirie and Mount Gambier. He was a lawyer, author, amateur poet and musician from Leone, Tutuila, American Samoa. He is best known for composing the American Samoan anthem, "Amerika Samoa". Fred Wood Jackman Sr. (July 9, 1881 – August 27, 1959), was an American cinematographer and film director of the silent film, silent era. He worked on 58 films as a cinematographer between 1916 and 1925. He also directed eleven films between 1919 and 1927, including two film serials for Hal Roach, Hal Roach Studios. He was born in Iowa and died in Hollywood, California. His son, Fred Jackman Jr. was at one time married to Nancy Kelly, who had been a child actress in silent films.
