Papua New Guinea Overall Championship
The Papua New Guinea National Club Championship is the top amateur division of association football in Papua New Guinea. It is a nationwide league and was probably founded in 1976. The league was the highest level of football administered by the Papua New Guinea Football Association (PNGFA) until the introduction of the semi-professional National Soccer League in 2006. Thereafter, there were two seasons which ran alongside the semi-professional league, in 2006 and 2008, before the league became defunct after the 2008 edition. In June 2019, the PNGFA announced that the league was to be revived. Papua New Guinea Football Association
The Papua New Guinea Football Association, PNGFA is the governing body of football (soccer) in Papua New Guinea. The PNGFA is a member of both FIFA and OFC, having FIFA and OFC affiliation in 1966 after being founded in 1962. The PNGFA is a member of the Papua New Guinea Olympic Committee, meaning that the PNGFA has control over the men's and women's PNG Olympic football team. In club football, they oversee the Papua New Guinea National Soccer League. History The PNGFA was founded in 1962. In 1966 the PNGFA was one of four founding members of the Oceania Football Confederation. Association offices first opened in Lae in 1999. The Association’s Academy opened in 2003. Lombrum Naval Base, also known as HMPNGS ''Tarangau'' and formerly PNG Defence Force Base Lombrum, is a naval military base operated by the Maritime Operations Element of the Papua New Guinea Defence Force (PNGDF). It is located on Manus Island in Papua New Guinea. Lombrum is the home port of the PNGDF's Pacific-class patrol boat force. After redevelopment in 1950 by the Royal Australian Navy, it was known as HMAS ''Seeadler'', being renamed HMAS ''Tarangau'' soon afterwards. The Manus Regional Processing Centre was established within the base in 2001. History The naval facility, Manus Naval Base, was first built during World War II as a "Lion" which was code for a major Fleet installation of the United States Navy. 2006 OFC Club Championship
The 2006 OFC Club Championship was the 5th edition of the top-level Oceanic club football tournament organized by the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC), and the last tournament before it was rebranded as the OFC Champions League. The qualifying round was held at Govind Park in Ba, Fiji, from 6 February until 10 February 2006, with the main competition taking place at the North Harbour Stadium in Albany, New Zealand from 10 May until 21 May 2006. The tournament was the first of its kind to not have a representative from Australia competing, due to the nation's migration to the Asian Football Confederation, meaning the winners of the competition would for the first time be from a nation outside of Australia. 2005 OFC Club Championship
The 2005 OFC Club Championship was the 4th edition of the top-level Oceanic club football tournament organized by the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC), and the 1st since 2001. The tournament was held in Papeete, Tahiti. The preliminary rounds were played from 10 February until 6 April 2005, with the finals beginning on 30 May and ending on 10 June 2005. The tournament was initially planned to take place in September 2002, in anticipation of the upcoming FIFA Club World Championship in the following year, in order to decide which team would represent Oceania at the tournament. However, this tournament was cancelled, and therefore so too was the Oceanic competition. With the return of the tournament in 2005, the OFC Club Championship went ahead, and the winner went on to represent Oceania at the 2005 FIFA Club World Championship. 2001 Oceania Club Championship
The 2001 Oceania Club Championships was held in January 2001. The tournament was designed to decide the Oceania Football Confederation's entrant into the 2001 FIFA Club World Championship; however that Club World Championship tournament was cancelled by FIFA. The competition was held in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, with all matches held at the Lloyd Robson Stadium. The tournament was won by Australian club Wollongong Wolves. Rapatona Football Club, formerly known as Inspac Rapatona FC, CMSS Rapatona Tigers FC, Moresby Casino Hotel and currently referred to as PKA Rapatona FC for sponsorship reasons, is a Papua New Guinea football club, based in Port Moresby and founded in 1982. The club was one of the earliest teams that competed in the Papua New Guinea National Soccer League, joining the league in its second season in 2007–08, and never failing to qualify for the championship playoffs in their four years of competition, reaching the Grand Final in the 2008–09 season. They also finished second in the Papua New Guinea National Club Championship on two occasions, as well as winning the regional Port Moresby Premier League twice, in 1989 and 2004.
