Papillion
Papillion is a city in Sarpy County in the state of Nebraska, United States. Designated as the county seat, it developed as an 1870s railroad town and suburb of Omaha. The city is part of the larger five-county metro area of Omaha. Papillion's population was 24,159 at the 2020 census. Its growth since the late 20th century has reflected Omaha's. Overview The city was named after the creek of the same name which flows through its center; this had been named by early French explorers, as France had claimed this territory through the eighteenth century. The name Papillion is derived from the French term (''papillon'') for butterfly. According to local tradition, the early French explorers named the creek as ''Papillon'' because they saw so many butterflies along its grassy banks. The spelling was changed through a transliteration of the French word. Papillion was platted in 1870 when the railroad was extended to that point. The Papillion-La Vista School District is headquartered in Papillion, Nebraska, United States. The district covers most of Papillion, almost all of La Vista, and small portions of Bellevue, Chalco, and Offutt AFB. The district was originally established as the Papillion School District, but with the rapid growth of La Vista (incorporated in 1960), the name of the city was officially added to the school district's name in 1987 by former Superintendent Roger Miller. Papillion-La Vista Senior High School, often referred to as Papio, PLHS, North or "Old School", is located in Papillion, Nebraska, United States and is operated by the Papillion-La Vista Public School District. Its school colors are maroon and gold, and the Mascot is monarchs. History The Papillion-La Vista Public Schools District originated well over a century ago. It is reported to be the first school district to be established in Nebraska Territory, in 1872. Papillion-La Vista High School dates back to September 1876. Originally housed in a single brick building at the corner of Halleck & Adams Streets, Papillion's only school served students in all 12 grades. In 1893 the school moved to a new brick building at 420 S. Washington Street, the present site of the district offices.
