{{unreferenced, date=October 2016 A paper money catalog or banknote catalog (or catalogue) is a catalog of banknotes and articles relating to notable examples. The catalog is an essential tool of collecting as it provides information about the articles that many times cannot be extracted from them directly, such as the number of banknotes printed. In the 1950s, Robert Friedberg published the ''Paper Money of the United States''. Friedberg devised an organizing number system of all types of U.S. banknotes; the system is widely accepted among collectors and dealers to this day, and the volume has been regularly updated. Another pioneer of cataloging banknotes was Albert Pick, a well-known German notaphilist (born 15 May 1922 in Cologne) who published a number of catalogs of European paper money, and, in 1974, the first '' Standard Catalog of World Paper Money''. Banknotes
A banknote—also called a bill (North American English), paper money, or simply a note—is a type of negotiable instrument, negotiable promissory note, made by a bank or other licensed authority, payable to the bearer on demand. Banknotes were originally issued by commercial banks, which were legally required to Redemption value, redeem the notes for legal tender (usually gold or silver coin) when presented to the chief cashier of the originating bank. These commercial banknotes only traded at face value in the market served by the issuing bank. The hobby of collecting includes seeking, locating, acquiring, organizing, cataloging, displaying, storing, and maintaining items that are of interest to an individual ''collector''. Collections differ in a wide variety of respects, most obviously in the nature and scope of the objects contained, but also in purpose, presentation, and so forth. Albert Pick
Albert Pick (born 15 May 1922, Cologne – 22 November 2015, Garmisch-Partenkirchen) was a German numismatist. An internationally acknowledged authority on the subject of paper money, Pick wrote the first modern catalog of banknotes in 1974, and is widely credited with establishing the modern face of banknote collecting. His ''Standard Catalog of World Paper Money'' is the standard reference work for banknote collectors worldwide. Career Pick started a collection of banknotes as a child in 1930. Later, after his war service (including a year as a P.O.W. in the United States), he went on to study philosophy, literature and history. He worked as the manager of a publishing house while amassing his collection of banknotes, at a time when notaphily, the collecting and study of paper money, was still in its infancy and a relatively cheap hobby. Notaphilist
Notaphily is the study and collection of paper currency, and banknotes. A notaphilist is a collector of banknotes or paper money, particularly as a hobby. History It is believed that people have been collecting paper money for as long as it has been in use. While people began collecting paper currency more systematically in the 1940s, the turning point occurred in the 1970s when notaphily was established as a separate area by collectors. The term was coined in 1970 by Robert Stanley, a linguist then employed as Public Relations Manager of the collectors and investments firm Stanley Gibbons, in a successful attempt to formalise and encourage interest in the area. Standard Catalog Of World Paper Money
The ''Standard Catalog of World Paper Money'' was a well-known catalogue of banknotes that was published by Krause Publications in three volumes. These catalogues are commonly known in the numismatic trade as the Pick catalogues, as the numbering system was originally compiled by Albert Pick, but are also referred to as "Krause" or "SCWPM." Since the mid-1980s the titles have been owned by Krause Publications, and from 1994–2016 were under the editorship of George S. Cuhaj, and subsequently by Tracy L. Schmidt. Numbering system The numbering system uses an integer to identify a note. The sorting of notes is usually by issue series/date, then ascending by denomination.
