Freemasonry
Freemasonry or Masonry refers to fraternal organisations that trace their origins to the local guilds of stonemasons that, from the end of the 13th century, regulated the qualifications of stonemasons and their interaction with authorities and clients. Modern Freemasonry broadly consists of two main recognition groups: * Regular Freemasonry insists that a volume of scripture be open in a working lodge, that every member profess belief in a Supreme Being, that no women be admitted, and that the discussion of religion and politics be banned. * Continental Freemasonry consists of the jurisdictions that have removed some, or all, of these restrictions. The basic, local organisational unit of Freemasonry is the Lodge. These private Lodges are usually supervised at the regional level (usually coterminous with a state, province, or national border) by a Grand Lodge or Grand Orient. There is no international, worldwide Grand Lodge that supervises all of Freemasonry; each Grand Lod ...

Quibus Quantisque Malis
''Quibus quantisque malis'' was a Papal Allocution of Pius IX addressed to the Consistory of Cardinals on April 20, 1849, discussing the recent political atmosphere. Pius IX was elected Pope in June 1846, during a time of political agitation which ultimately led to the brief Roman Republic of 1849. In ''Quibus quantusque'', Pius gives a retrospective analysis of his first three years as Pope. He discusses some of the most important events, his intentions and the maneuvering of certain revolutionary elements who worked to capitalize on them. One of his first acts was to declare an amnesty for all the political prisoners held in the papal jails. Revolutionaries in Rome exploited Pius IX's concessions, and continuously stirred up the populous to exert pressure in order to obtain additional ones. And it escapes no one that many who had been generously given that pardon not only did not change their thoughts at all, as We were hoping, but instead, as they persisted each day more bitterl ...

Praeclara Gratulationis Publicae
''Praeclara gratulationis publicae'' (''Splendid testimonies of public ejoicing') is an apostolic letter of Pope Leo XIII promulgated on 20 June 1894. Content It called for the reunion of Eastern and Western churches into the "Unity of the Faith". It also condemned Freemasonry. A previous letter on the same subject, entitled the epistle to the Easterners, had been written by Pope Pius IX in 1848. Reactions and legacy In 1895, it was criticized by Ecumenical Patriarch Anthimus VII. The call for unity was re-asserted by the Second Vatican Council's '' Unitatis redintegratio'', although the latter statement articulates a different kind of ecclesiology that is more in line with the Council's spirit of cooperation with fellow Christians. ''Praeclara'' was cited in the encyclical ''Orientales omnes Ecclesias'' of Pope Pius XII on the topic of Eastern Catholic Churches. Leo XIII has also been criticized by Protestant fundamentalists for having declared in the encyclical that "We ...

Inimica Vis
''Inimica vis is'' a papal encyclical addressed to the Catholic bishops of Italy. It remarked on the multiple condemnations of Freemasonry over the preceding century and a half and concentrated on the local difficulties of the Italian church. It was promulgated by Leo XIII in 1892. It is viewed as reproving the Italian bishops for an apathetic response to Freemasonry and it complained that some members of the Catholic clergy were co-operating with the Masonic and anticlerical government of Italy. It was seen as the start of Papal "bargaining" with the forces symbolised by Freemasonry, although it has also been noted that Freemasonry was denounced as a "vile sect".page 144, ''World Christianities, C. 1815-1914'', y Sheridan Gilley, Brian Stanley, Cambridge University Press. On the same date ''Inimica vis'' was promulgated, 18 December 1892, Pope Leo XIII wrote '' Custodi di quella fede'', an encyclical epistle addressed to the Italian people, attacking Freemasonry. Humanum Genus
''Humanum genus'' is a papal encyclical promulgated on 20 April 1884 by Pope Leo XIII. Released in the ascent of the industrial age, Marxism, and the aftermath of the September 20, 1870, Capture of Rome by the Kingdom of Italy military forces from the Papal States, ''Humanum genus'' is principally a condemnation of Freemasonry. It states that the late 19th century was a dangerous era for the Roman Catholic Church, largely due to numerous concepts and practices it attributes to Freemasonry, namely naturalism, popular sovereignty, and the separation of church and state. Some of the strictures found in ''Humanum genus'' still remain in force today. Historical circumstances Following the French withdrawal of its military garrison in Rome in the anticipation of the Franco-Prussian War, the 1870 Capture of Rome itself was a major battle within the long process of Italian unification known as the Risorgimento, marking the final military defeat of the Papal States under Pope Pius ...

Etsi Nos
''Etsi Nos'' ( en, On Conditions in Italy) was a papal encyclical promulgated by Pope Leo XIII in 1882 denouncing the way in which post-unification Italy denigrated the role of the Church,"If ever these perils were menacing in Italy they are surely so now, at a time when the condition of the Civil State itself disastrously imperils the freedom of religion." Paragraph 1''Etsi Nos'')/ref> which it blamed primarily on Freemasonry: :"It is even reported that this year it is about to receive the deputies and leaders of the sect which is most embittered against Catholicism, who have appointed this city as the place for their solemn meeting. The reasons which have determined their choice of such a meeting place are no secret; they desire by this outrageous provocation to glut the hatred which they nourish against the Church, and to bring their incendiary torches within reach of the Roman Pontificate by attacking it in its very seat."Paragraph 3''Etsi Nos''/ref> "Etsi Nos" was one of Leo' ...

Leo XIII
Pope Leo XIII ( it, Leone XIII; born Vincenzo Gioacchino Raffaele Luigi Pecci; 2 March 1810 – 20 July 1903) was the head of the Catholic Church from 20 February 1878 to his death in July 1903. Living until the age of 93, he was the second-oldest-serving pope, and the third-longest-lived pope in history, before Pope Benedict XVI as Pope emeritus, and had the fourth-longest reign of any, behind those of St. Peter, Pius IX (his immediate predecessor) and John Paul II. He is well known for his intellectualism and his attempts to define the position of the Catholic Church with regard to modern thinking. In his famous 1891 encyclical '' Rerum novarum'', Pope Leo outlined the rights of workers to a fair wage, safe working conditions, and the formation of trade unions, while affirming the rights of property and free enterprise, opposing both socialism and laissez-faire capitalism. With that encyclical, he became popularly titled as the "Social Pope" and the "Pope of the Workers", a ...

Etsi Multa
''Etsi multa'' (On The Church in Italy, Germany, and Switzerland) is a papal encyclical that was published by Pope Pius IX on November 21, 1873. The encyclical stated that there were three campaigns being waged against the Church at the time: * The ''Kulturkampf'' in the German Empire."This noble constancy of the faithful Swiss is emulated with no less commendation by the clergy and faithful in Germany, who themselves follow the illustrious example of their ecclesiastical leaders. The Germans, assuming the shield of Catholic truth and the helms of salvation, fight the battles of the Lord and are a wonder to the world, to the angels, and to men who look on them from every side. All the more is their fortitude of spirit and unbroken constancy admired and extolled with outstanding praise as the bitter persecution set in motion against them in the German Empire and especially in Prussia increases with each day." Para 11''Etsi multa'' * The suppression by the post-unification Italian ...
