Panoche Valley Solar Farm
Panoche Valley Solar Farm is a 130 megawatt (MW), utility-scale solar photovoltaic power station in the Panoche Valley of Central California's San Benito County. Panoche Valley is crossed by a 230-kilovolt (kV) power line from the Moss Landing Power Plant. Originally proposed by Solargen Energy (later known as Nevo Energy), the project was purchased by PV2 Energy in April 2011, with Nevo Energy retaining a small equity interest, but no voting, governance or management input. In April 2012, PV2 Energy entered into a joint venture with Duke Energy, the largest utility in the United States. The project was eventually acquired by Con Edison in 2016. The project site consists of of private land in the northern portion of the valley. It is used for pasture-based livestock grazing on native grassland habitat. Panoche Valley is a grassland valley lying between the Diablo Range and the San Joaquin Valley, in San Benito County, California. The valley is bound on the north by Panoche Hills, on the east by Tumey Hills, on the south by the Griswold Hills and Cerro Bonito, and on the in west by Las Aguilas Mountains. The valley is known by naturalists as a hot spot for rare birds and mammals, and for providing a glimpse of old California. The California Valley Solar Ranch (CVSR) is a 250 megawatt (MW AC) photovoltaic power plant in the Carrizo Plain, northeast of California Valley. The project is owned by NRG Energy, and SunPower is the EPC contractor and technology provider. The project constructed on of a site of former grazing land. It is utilizing high-efficiency, crystalline PV panels designed and manufactured by SunPower. The endangered San Joaquin kit fox (''Vulpes macrotis mutica'') was formerly very common in the San Joaquin Valley and through much of Central California. Blunt-nosed Leopard Lizard
''Gambelia sila'', commonly known as the blunt-nosed leopard lizard, is a species of lizard in the family Crotaphytidae. The species is endemic to southern California. Taxonomy ''Gambelia sila'' was originally described by Leonhard Stejneger in 1890 as ''Crotaphytus silus''. The type locality is Fresno, California. In 1900 Cope believed the lizard to be a subspecies of the long-nosed leopard lizard, ''C. wislizenii'', and classified it as ''C. w. silus''. Based on differences in bony plates on the head, the presence or absence of gular folds, and head shape, ''Crotaphytus silus'' was reclassified into the genus ''Gambelia'' by H.M. The giant kangaroo rat (''Dipodomys ingens'') is an endangered species of heteromyid rodent endemic to California. Description The giant kangaroo rat, is the largest of over 20 species of kangaroo rats, which are small members of the rodent family, measuring about in length, including its long, tufted tail. It is tan or brown in color. Like other kangaroo rats it has a large head and large eyes, and long, strong hind leg with which helps it hop at high speeds. The giant kangaroo rat has been recently added to the endangered species list due to its habitat being severely reduced. Data was collected on its foraging behavior and social structure. Traps baited kangaroo rats with oats in them for four weeks in the summer. The animals were captured, tagged with tracking devices and set free.
