Panama Crisis Of 1885
The Panama Crisis of 1885 was an intervention by the United States in support of a rebellion in Panama, at the time part of Colombia, and an ensuing show of force by Chile. Background The 1846 Mallarino–Bidlack Treaty, signed by Republic of New Granada (Colombia and Panama) and the United States, obligated the United States to maintain "neutrality" in the Colombian state of Panama in exchange for transit rights in the isthmus on behalf of Colombia. Chile's influence in the region followed its victory in the War of the Pacific. In this war, Chile defeated Bolivia and Peru and gained large swathes of territory from both, removing Bolivia's access to the sea. U.S. imperialist economic interests lay with Bolivia and Peru, and Chile rejected American attempts to mediate. Isthmus Of Panama
The Isthmus of Panama ( es, Istmo de Panamá), also historically known as the Isthmus of Darien (), is the narrow strip of land that lies between the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean, linking North and South America. It contains the country of Panama and the Panama Canal. Like many isthmuses, it is a location of great geopolitical and strategic importance. The isthmus is thought to have been formed around 3 million years ago, separating the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans and causing the creation of the Gulf Stream. USS Shenandoah (1862)
The first USS ''Shenandoah'' was a wooden screw sloop of the United States Navy. ''Shenandoah'' was built by the Philadelphia Navy Yard and launched on 8 December 1862. She was sponsored by Miss Selina Pascoe; and was commissioned on 20 June 1863, Captain Daniel B. Ridgeley in command. Civil War duty, 1863–1865 ''Shenandoah'' departed Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on the 25th, keeping a sharp lookout for Confederate raider, , as she made her trial run to Boston to fill out her complement. On 11 July, she sailed in search of Confederate raider, ''Florida'', cruised off George's and Nantucket shoals, thence preceded toward Block Island and Cape Sable.
