Pana Coal Miners
The Pana Coal Miners were a minor league baseball team based in Pana, Illinois. In 1907 and 1908, the Coal Miners played exclusively as members of the Class D (baseball), Class D level Eastern Illinois League. Pana hosted home minor league home games at Kitchell Park. History Minor league baseball began in Pana, Illinois when the 1907 Pana Coal Miners became charter members of the Eastern Illinois League, which began play as a six–team Class D (baseball), Class D level league under league president L. A. G. Shoaff. The 1908 Baseball guides, Spalding Guide indicated the league was founded in Pana, Illinois and the league's "godfather" was Joe Adams (baseball), Joe Adams, also known as "Old Wagon Tongue," who would manage the Pana Team. In 1907, Pana and the other league teams had a salary limit of $600. Sporting Life (American Newspaper)
The ''Sporting Life'' was an American weekly newspaper, published from 1883 to 1917 and from 1922 to 1924, that provided national coverage on sports with a particular focus on baseball and trap shooting. The masthead on the front page of newspaper displayed the motto (shown in image at right): "Devoted to Base Ball, Trap Shooting and General Sports." It was founded in Philadelphia in 1883 by Francis Richter, Thomas Sotesbury Dando, and August Rudolph. Richter was the newspaper's publisher until 1917. He hired correspondents to report from locales across the United States and continued to publish and edit the ''Sporting Life'' until 1917. Throughout most of its existence, it was in competition with ''The Sporting News'', which was founded in 1886 and published by the Spink brothers in St. Louis. Linton, Indiana
Linton is a city in Stockton Township, Greene County, Indiana, United States. The population was 5,413 at the 2010 census. A coal mining city, it is located southeast of Terre Haute. The current mayor is John Wilkes. Linton is part of the Bloomington, Indiana, metropolitan area. History Linton was essentially founded around the entrepreneuring of John W. Wines, who first sold goods in the Linton area, briefly in 1831. Although he would later relocate to Fairplay, Indiana, he returned and opened a general store in Linton in 1837. He would later build a small horse mill as well as a tannery. The city itself was officially chartered and named in June 1850, laid out by Hannah E. Osborn and Isaac V. Coddington. In the late 19th century, small underground coal mines began to appear near and almost inside the city and the population expanded rapidly. The Paris Parisians were an Eastern Illinois League baseball team based in Paris, Illinois that played during the 1908 season. That season, team executive L. A. G. Schoaff was elected president and secretary of the Eastern Illinois League. The club earned a spot on '' Sporting Life's'' "Base Ball Chronology", which according to the periodical was "the complete and concise record of the most wonderful year in the history of the national game." The team's mention on the record was due to an 18-inning match it played against Danville on June 11, which ended in a tie. On June 29, mere weeks after the team's 18-inning affair, the team sold first baseman Charley Staley to the Washington Senators of Major League Baseball's American League. In baseball, a no-hitter is a game in which a team was not able to record a hit. Major League Baseball (MLB) officially defines a no-hitter as a completed game in which a team that batted in at least nine innings recorded no hits.
