Pan American Games
The Pan American Games (also known colloquially as the Pan Am Games) is a continental multi-sport event in the Americas featuring summer sports, in which thousands of athletes participate in a variety of competitions. The competition is held among athletes from nations of the Americas, every four years in the year before the Summer Olympic Games. The only Winter Pan American Games were held in 1990. In 2021, the Junior Pan American Games was held for the first time specifically for young athletes. The Pan American Sports Organization (PASO) is the governing body of the Pan American Games movement, whose structure and actions are defined by the Olympic Charter. Pan American Stadium is a 5,000 seat multi-purpose outdoor stadium, located in City Park, in New Orleans, Louisiana. It is used for soccer, American football, lacrosse and rugby. It is currently home to the New Orleans Jesters of the National Premier Soccer League (NPSL) and Motagua New Orleans of the Gulf Coast Premier League. University Stadium is a multipurpose stadium located on the campus grounds of the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. It features a 400m 8-lane track, as well as separate areas for long jump/triple jump, high jump, pole vault, discus, hammer, shot put, and javelin. Inside the track is a large natural grass field used for football and soccer. The stadium was home to the Manitoba Bisons football program until the team relocated next door to Investors Group Field in 2013. York Lions Stadium is an outdoor sports stadium on the Keele Campus of Toronto's York University in the former city of North York. It is home to the York Lions, the varsity teams of York University, the Toronto Arrows of Major League Rugby and York United of the Canadian Premier League. Estadio Panamericano (Stade Panaméricain de La Havane) is a multi-use stadium located near Cojimar, a city ward of Havana, Cuba. It is used mostly for athletics, baseball, and as an alternate site for the Cuba national football team. History It was first used as the main stadium for the 1991 Pan American Games. The stadium opened August 1, 1991 and is able to hold 34,000 people (can have expanded capacity to 50,000). It served as the site of an episode of the American version of Top Gear in 2016. The episode showed the stadium in disrepair and mostly abandoned. Renovations The stadium was renovated in 2008 with an artificial turf replacing the original grass turf. The Estadio Panamericano de Béisbol, (formerly Estadio Telmex de Atletismo), is a baseball and athletics stadium located in Zapopan, near Guadalajara, Mexico. It was built for the 2011 Pan American Games at substantial cost. It opened in 2011 and received official certification from the International Association of Athletics Federations just days before the start of the Pan American Games. It will have a permanent capacity of 8,000, but will be increased to 15,000 during the games. It has an eight-lane tartan track as well as an adjoining warm-up track. The Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre (TPASC; ) is a sports complex in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Co-owned by the City of Toronto and the University of Toronto Scarborough, it is operated by TPASC Inc., with programming offered by both the university and Toronto Parks, Forestry & Recreation. The Ajax Sportsplex is a baseball and softball facility located in Ajax, Ontario, Canada that hosted the baseball and softball competitions at the 2015 Pan American Games. During the games the venue was known as the ''President's Choice Ajax Ballpark.'' Description The facility consists of four softball diamonds and two baseball diamonds at Taunton Road and Audley Road in north east Ajax. Prior to the games the facility received 9 million dollars in upgrades to ensure it met World Baseball Softball Confederation standards, which included converting two soccer fields into a baseball diamond and the adjacent existing baseball diamond being rebuilt with new sod and clay. The Back Campus Fields is a field hockey facility on the St. George Campus of the University of Toronto in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The facility is the home to the school's Toronto Varsity Blues field hockey team. The facility was built for the 2015 Pan American Games and hosted the field hockey competition for the games. It is located in southwest Winnipeg and consists of three pools: two are used for competitive swimming and one is a children's "kiddie pool".
