Palmares, Pernambuco
Palmares is a city in northeastern Brazil, in the State of Pernambuco, with 63,500 inhabitants, according with IBGE 2020. Its main activity is the combined field of agriculture and livestock ( pt, agropecuária). It received its name from the Portuguese people who named it that due to the number of palm trees in the area where run-away slaves had created approximately 16 quilombos, led by Zumbi. Palmares (canton)
Palmares is a canton in the Alajuela province of Costa Rica. History Palmares was created on 30 July 1888 by decree 68. The first settlers in what today is Palmares are believed to have arrived in 1835 from the cities of Alajuela and Belén, looking for land where to cultivate tobacco and other products. Geography Palmares has an area of km2 and a mean elevation of metres. The canton encompasses a circular area with the city of Palmares at its center. The Aguacate Mountains establish the boundary on the canton's southwestern edge and the Grande River delineates the boundary on its north and northeast sides. Palmares (quilombo)
Palmares, or Quilombo dos Palmares, was a ''quilombo'', a community of escaped slaves and others, in colonial Brazil that developed from 1605 until its suppression in 1694. It was located in the captaincy of Pernambuco, in what is today the Brazilian state of Alagoas. The quilombo was located in what is now the municipality of União dos Palmares. Background The modern tradition has been to call the community the ''Quilombo of Palmares''. ''Quilombos'' were settlements mainly of survivors and free-born enslaved African people. The ''quilombos'' came into existence when Africans began arriving in Brazil in the mid-1530s and grew significantly as slavery expanded. No contemporary document called Palmares a ''quilombo''; instead the term '' mocambo'' was used. Palmares was home to not only escaped enslaved Africans, but also to Indigenous peoples, caboclos, and poor or marginalized Portuguese settlers, especially Portuguese soldiers trying to escape forced military service. Gayl Jones (born November 23, 1949) is an American writer from Lexington, Kentucky. She is recognized as a key figure in 20th-century African-American literature. Zumbi Dos Palmares International Airport
Maceió/Zumbi dos Palmares International Airport , formerly called Campo dos Palmares Airport, is the airport serving Maceió, Brazil. Since 16 December 1999 the airport is named after Zumbi dos Palmares (1645–1695) one of the pioneers of resistance to slavery in Brazil. The airport is operated by AENA. History The airport complex underwent major renovation in 2005, in which the passenger terminal and apron were renovated and the runway was extended.
