Palm Bay High School
Palm Bay Magnet High School is a public high school located in Melbourne, Florida, north of the boundary of Palm Bay, Florida. It is part of the Brevard County School District. History The school originally opened as Southwest Junior High School in 1960, in an area near what is now the Florida Institute of Technology and a historically black neighborhood in the south Melbourne area. At the time, Stone Middle School was serving as a school primarily for black students in the area, serving multiple grades. As desegregation progressed, the schools were re-purposed as Stone became a middle school with white children being bussed in from all neighborhoods south of New Haven Avenue (US 192). Shortly thereafter, Southwest became Palm Bay Senior High. Southwest Middle School was reconstituted within Palm Bay in 1988. The Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps (JROTC -- commonly pronounced "JAY-rotsee") is a federal program sponsored by the United States Armed Forces in high schools and also in some middle schools across the United States and at US military bases across the world. Future Problem Solving Program International (FPSPI), originally known as Future Problem Solving Program (FPSP), and often abbreviated to FPS, is a non-profit educational program that organizes academic competitions in which students apply critical thinking and problem-solving skills to hypothetical future situations. The program looks at current technological, geopolitical, and societal trends and projects those trends 20–30 years into the future in order to train students to develop solutions to the challenges they may face as adults. Bayside High School is a public high school located in Palm Bay, Florida, United States. It is part of the Brevard County School District. History Bayside was opened in August 1998 with grades 9 and 10. Grade 11 was added in 1999, grade 12 in 2000. The first graduation was held in May 2001. Upon its construction, Bayside was the first new high school campus built in the Brevard County School District in more than a quarter century—since Astronaut High School in Titusville opened in 1972. On May 12, 2008, the school was evacuated, threatened by a citywide fire. The school was closed the following day along with other schools in the Palm Bay area. Melbourne High School or Mel-Hi is a public secondary school located in Melbourne, Florida, United States and operated by Brevard Public Schools. History The original high school was built on New Haven Avenue in 1919. It is now the Henegar Center. In 1948, the old Eau Gallie High School on Pineapple Avenue closed. Their former students were bused to Melbourne High. Rotary International chartered their first Interact service club ever with 23 students at the school in 1960. In about 1953, Zora Neale Hurston staged the school's first integrated concert, though the school had not yet been integrated itself. The school experienced race riots during the period of integration from 1969 to 1976. The school's International Baccalaureate Prep program started in 1981.
