Pallene (moon)
Pallene is a very small natural satellite of Saturn. It is one of three small moons known as the Alkyonides that lie between the orbits of the larger Mimas and Enceladus. It is also designated . Discovery Pallene was discovered by the Cassini Imaging Team in 2004, during the Cassini–Huygens mission. It was given the temporary designation . In 2005, the name Pallene was provisionally approved by the IAU Division III Working Group for Planetary System Nomenclature, and was ratified at the IAU General Assembly in 2006. The name refers to Pallene, one of the Alkyonides, the seven beautiful daughters of the giant Alkyoneus. After the discovery in 2004, it was realized that Pallene had been first photographed on August 23, 1981, by the space probe '. It had appeared in a single photograph and had been provisionally named and estimated to orbit 200,000 km from Saturn. In Greek mythology, the name Pallene ( ; Ancient Greek: Παλλήνη) may refer to two Thracian characters: * Pallene, one of the Alcyonides, daughters of the giant Alcyoneus. She was the sister of Alkippe, Anthe, Asteria, Drimo, Methone and Phthonia ( Phosthonia or Chthonia). When their father was slain by Heracles, these girls threw themselves into the sea from Kanastraion, which is the peak of Pellene. They were then transformed into halcyons (kingfishers) by the goddess Amphitrite. * Pallene, a Thracian princess as the daughter of King Sithon and the nymph Mendeis or the naiad Achiroe,Tzetzes on Lycophron, 1161 and the sister of Rhoeteia. The Alcyonides (, ''Alkyonides'') were, in Greek mythology, the seven daughters of the giant Alcyoneus. Saturn is the sixth planet from the Sun and the second-largest in the Solar System, after Jupiter. It is a gas giant with an average radius of about nine and a half times that of Earth. Methone is a small, egg-shaped moon of Saturn that orbits out past Saturn's ring system, between the orbits of Mimas and Enceladus. It was discovered in 2004, though it wasn't until 2012 that it was imaged in detail by the '' Cassini'' spacecraft. In Greek mythology, Alcyoneus or Alkyoneus (; Ancient Greek: Ἀλκυονεύς ''Alkuoneus'') was a traditional opponent of the hero Heracles.
