Palentown is a hamlet in Ulster County, New York, United States. Named, like Palenville in Greene County, for a family that ran tanneries in the Catskills in the mid-19th century, Palentown is situated inside the Catskill Park in the northwest part of the town of Rochester. Palentown is located off Ulster County Route 3 (Samsonville Road) just south of the Rochester-Olive town line. The hamlet is northeast of the nearby hamlet of Riggsville and south of the Olive hamlet of Samsonville. It is within the Kerhonkson, New York ZIP Code. Ulster County is a county in the U.S. state of New York. It is situated along the Hudson River. As of the 2020 census, the population was 181,851. The county seat is Kingston. The county is named after the Irish province of Ulster. History Founding and formation When part of the New Netherland colony, Dutch traders first called the area of present-day Ulster County "Esopus", a name borrowed for convenience from a locality on the opposite side of the Hudson. The local Lenape indigenous people called themselves Waranawanka, but soon came to be known to the Dutch as the "Esopus Indians" because they were encountered around the settlement known as Esopus. Palenville is a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) in Greene County, New York, United States. The population was 1,037 at the 2010 census. Palenville is in the southwestern part of the town of Catskill, located at the junction of Routes 23A and 32A. It lies at the foot of Kaaterskill Clove, at the base of the Catskill Mountains. Kaaterskill Creek, exiting the Clove, runs through the town, and was spanned by a swinging footbridge, destroyed during Tropical Storm Irene. The creek provides a number of swimming holes in the summer months, and the Long Path runs through the town. Catskill Park
The Catskill Park is in the Catskill Mountains in New York in the United States. It consists of of land inside a Blue Line in four counties: Delaware, Greene, Sullivan, and Ulster. As of 2005, or 41 percent of the land within, is owned by the state as part of the Forest Preserve; it is managed by the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC). Another 5% is owned by New York City to protect four of the city's reservoirs in the region that lie partially within the park and their respective watersheds. There are bobcats, minks and fishers in the preserve, and coyotes are often heard. There are some 400 black bears living in the region. The state operates numerous campgrounds and there are over of multi-use trails. Hunting is permitted, in season, in much of the park. Samsonville is a hamlet (place), hamlet in the southwestern part of the town of Olive, New York, Olive in Ulster County, New York, United States. Bordered to the north by Mombaccus Mountain and Ashokan High Point, it is within the Catskill Park on the southeastern slopes of the high Catskill Mountains, Catskills. Early History Native American hunters made use of a natural rock shelter beneath a cliff in the area now called Samsonville as early as 2000 BC and possibly as late as 1600 AD. Excavations at the site yielded stone blades, potsherds, arrowheads and spear points. The area that includes Samsonville was once known as Subbeatty land (Mombaccus Mountain was called Subbeatty Mountain).
