Palazzo Doria-Tursi
The palazzo Doria-Tursi or palazzo Niccolò Grimaldi is a building on Via Giuseppe Garibaldi in the historic town centre of Genoa. With Palazzo Rosso and Palazzo Bianco it houses the Strada Nuova Museums and on 13 July 2006 all three palaces and the streets around them became the Genoa: Le Strade Nuove and the system of the Palazzi dei Rolli World Heritage Site. Since 1848 Palazzo Doria-Tursi has also housed the city hall of Genoa. History The largest palazzo on the street and the only one built on three lots of land, it was begun in 1565 by the Mannerist architects Domenico and Giovanni Ponzello, pupils of Galeazzo Alessi, for Niccolò Grimaldi, known as "il Monarca" for his huge number of noble titles and for being main banker to Philip II of Spain. It had two large gardens to frame the central building. Niccolò Paganini
Niccolò (or Nicolò) Paganini (; 27 October 178227 May 1840) was an Italian violinist and composer. He was the most celebrated violin virtuoso of his time, and left his mark as one of the pillars of modern violin technique. Giuseppe Guarneri Del Gesù
Bartolomeo Giuseppe "del Gesù" Guarneri (, , ; 21 August 1698 – 17 October 1744) was an Italian luthier from the Guarneri family of Cremona. He rivals Antonio Stradivari (1644–1737) with regard to the respect and reverence accorded his instruments, and for many prominent players and collectors his instruments are the most coveted of all. Instruments made by Guarneri are often referred to as ''Del Gesùs''. Guarneri is known as ''del Gesù'' (literally "of Jesus") because his labels after 1731 incorporated the ''nomen sacrum'', IHS (''iota-eta-sigma'') and a cross fleury. His instruments diverged significantly from family tradition, becoming uniquely his own style. They are considered equal in quality to those of Stradivari, and claimed by some to be superior. Nicolò Barabino
Nicolò Barabino (1831–1891) was an Italian academic painter of religious and historical subjects, active in Florence and Genoa. Biography He was born in Sampierdarena. His initial studies were at the Genovese Accademia Ligustica di Belle Arti, under Giuseppe Isola. In Genoa, he befriended Maurizio Dufour. In 1857, he won the Durazzo scholarship to attend the Accademia di Belle Arti Firenze, Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence. The Musei di Strada Nuova in the Italian city of Genoa comprise three museums which together form a single complex, housed in the Palazzo Rosso, the Palazzo Bianco and the Palazzo Tursi, all of which are located along the Via Garibaldi (formerly the Strada Nuova). The Palazzo Tursi is also Genoa's city hall. The unified collection was founded in 2004 with the decision to create a single visitor route linking all three palaces, all with a single owner. Burmantofts Pottery was the common trading name of a manufacturer of ceramic pipes and construction materials, named after the Burmantofts district of Leeds, England. Company history The business began in 1859 when fire clay was discovered in a coal mine owned by William Wilcock and John Lassey. In 1863 Lassey's share was bought by John Holroyd and the company then named Wilcock & Co. In 1879, after a period of expansion, the firm made decorative bricks and tiles in orange or buff-coloured architectural terracotta, glazed bricks, and glazed terracotta (faience).
