Paid In Advance
''Paid in Advance'' is a 1919 American silent drama film set during the Alaska Gold Rush, from the story ''The Girl Who Dared'' by James Oliver Curwood. The film was directed by Allen Holubar, who wrote the screen adaption as well. The movie stars Dorothy Phillips, Joseph W. Girard, Lon Chaney, and Priscilla Dean. A still exists showing the lead heroine holding Bateese Le Blanc (Lon Chaney) at gunpoint. A nitrate stock print (with Czech subtitles) is housed at the Narodni Filmovy Archive in Czechoslovakia Synopsis John Gray, an old fur trapper, lives with his beautiful daughter Joan in the Canadian Northwest. Allen Holubar
Allen Holubar (August 3, 1890 – November 20, 1923) was an American actor, film director, and screenwriter of the silent film era. He appeared in 38 films between 1913 and 1917. He also directed 33 films between 1916 and 1923. Career Allen Holubar started out as an actor on the stage where he met his wife Dorothy Phillips in the Chicago production of ''Every Woman''. While she turned to the screen and continued to act he became a director and even produced. Encouraged by these successes, together they formed the Allen Holubar Production Company in 1920. His 1918 film ''The Heart of Humanity'' was exhibited at Museum of Modern Art, The Museum of Modern Art in 2014. Marriage and death Holubar was married to actress Dorothy Phillips for eleven years from 1912 until his death in 1923 from pneumonia, following surgery, at the age of 33. William Stowell
William Stowell (March 13, 1885 – November 24, 1919) was an American silent film actor. A handsome actor with matinee idol good looks, Stowell was signed into film in 1909 with IMP (forerunner of Universal Studios), and debuted by starring in the popular hit '' The Cowboy Millionaire'' (1909), also starring Tom Mix. Between 1909 and 1919 Stowell starred in 119 silent films, often playing in over 10 films a year. In 1915 he starred in ''The Great Question'' alongside actors such as Harold Lockwood with American Studios. In 1916 he starred in ''The Love Hermit'' portraying Jack Hillman, and began appearing in a series of Universal features that paired him with Lon Chaney and Dorothy Phillips. Stowell's early death brought the series of adventures to a close. In 1918 he co-starred with Dorothy Phillips and Erich Von Stroheim in ''The Heart of Humanity''.
