The Paddington Ward (formerly Toowong Ward) is a Brisbane City Council ward covering Paddington, Auchenflower, Kelvin Grove, Milton, Petrie Terrace, Red Hill, and parts of Bardon and Toowong. History Toowong Ward was created in 1994 as a merger of Liberal-held Taringa Ward and Labor-held Paddington Ward. Liberal councillor Judy Magub was elected in 1994 and re-elected in 1997, 2000 and 2004, before retiring in 2007. 2016 Brisbane City Council Election
Elections to Brisbane City Council were held on Saturday, 19 March 2016 to elect a councillor to each of the local government area's 26 wards and the direct election of the Lord Mayor of Brisbane. The election resulted in the comprehensive re-election of the Liberal National Party under Graham Quirk as Lord Mayor. The Liberal National's increased their representation by one ward to a total of 19 of 26. The lord mayoral result of 59.3% of the two-party-preferred vote was reduced for Quirk from the 69.5% result at the previous election. The main opposition party, the Labor Party was reduced to just 5 wards; its worst result in over a decade. The Queensland Greens won their first ward in this election. Auchenflower is an inner suburb of the City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. Torwood is a neighbourhood () within Auchenflower. Geography Auchenflower is located west of the Brisbane CBD bordering the Brisbane River. History The area was formerly populated by rural estates, one of which was named ''Auchenflower'' by Thomas McIlwraith circa 1880. The name ''Auchenflower'' is a Gaelic word meaning ''field of flowers''. Between 1900 and 1962 Auchenflower was served by trams running along Milton Road from Toowong. The services were withdrawn after the disastrous Paddington tram depot fire. In May 1920, "Drysllwyn Estate" made up of 37 allotments was advertised to be auctioned by Cameron Bros, auctioneers. Geography The suburb is by road west of the Brisbane General Post Office. The precinct is bordered to the west by Hale Street and to the east by Countess Street. Bardon is a western suburb of the City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. It is located approximately north-west of the Brisbane CBD. Toowong is a riverside suburb in the City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. In the , Toowong had a population of 10,830 people. Geography Toowong is situated between Mount Coot-tha and the Brisbane River and is made up of rolling hills with little flat land. Since European settlement most of the land has been cleared for residential and commercial use with the exception of some park land and bushland near the Western Freeway. At the centre of Toowong is a commercial precinct including Toowong Village, and several other commercial and office buildings.
