PS Duchess Of Montrose
PS ''Duchess of Montrose'' was a paddle steamer launched in 1902 and operated by the Caledonian Steam Packet Company as a Clyde steamer, River Clyde excursion steamer. She saw active service during the World War I, First World War after being requisitioned by the Admiralty (United Kingdom), Admiralty and converted into a Minesweeper (ship), minesweeper. She was lost near Dunkirk on 18 March 1917 after striking a Naval mine, mine. Construction In October 1901 the Caledonian Steam Packet Company invited tenders from six of the Clyde shipyards to build a replacement for the paddle steamer PS Meg Merrilies, ''Meg Merrilies''. On 29 October 1901 they accepted an offer made by John Brown & Company of Clydebank to build the ship for £19,572,Paterson, Alan J.S. (1969) ''The Golden Years of the Clyde Steamers (1889-1914)''. Violet Hermione Graham, Duchess of Montrose GBE (10 September 1854 – 21 November 1940) was a British philanthropist and anti-suffragist. Graham served as president of the Scottish branch of the Women's National Anti-Suffrage League. Her husband was Douglas Graham, 5th Duke of Montrose. Early life and marriage Violet Graham was born in London in 1854, the daughter of Sir Frederick Graham, 3rd Baronet of Netherby and Jane Hermione St. Maur, daughter of Edward St. Maur, 12th Duke of Somerset. She married the 5th Duke of Montrose, a Scottish nobleman, in 1876. Together they lived at the Clan Graham's Buchanan Castle in Scotland.
