PKP Class Lyd2
The PKP class Lyd2 (manufacturer designation L30H) is a narrow gauge diesel-hydraulic locomotive built by FAUR (former 23 August Works) in Romania, for use initially for sugar cane railway in Egypt with later variants developed for use in Poland, Romania and Albania. It was commissioned by Polskie Koleje Państwowe for service on the railways of Poland. Description The Lyd2 classification gives the technical details of the locomotives in Polish State Railways (PKP) system. L indicates a narrow gauge locomotive, y indicates 3 axles (0-6-0 or C), d indicates diesel fuel, and finally, 2 indicates hydraulic transmission. The locomotive is configured with a single cab, with driving positions for both directions. The diesel engine (Maybach MB83B built under licence) produces though documentation shows a peak rating of 415 bhp from a normally aspirated engine. Bieszczady Forest Railway
The Bieszczady Forest Railway (Polish: ''Bieszczadzka Kolejka Leśna'') is a narrow gauge railway built in a sparsely populated, forested region of the Bieszczady Mountains. Construction commenced at the end of the 19th century and completed before World War I. Regular traffic ceased in 1994. Nowadays, a part of the railway is utilized as a tourist attraction. Trains run regularly on weekends from the beginning of May until October, and also on weekdays in July and August. The main station with all the rolling stock is located in Majdan near Cisna. FAUR S.A. is an industrial engineering and manufacturing company based in Bucharest, Romania. History FAUR was founded by Nicolae Malaxa in 1921 under the name MALAXA. Main activities were the repairing of rolling stock, manufacturing steam locomotives, diesel locomotives, car-engines and passenger coaches, diesel engines, brake equipment, and special alloy steels. By the end of the 1930s, the Malaxa factories were one of the biggest industrial group in Southeastern Europe, and the main provider of equipment for the Romanian Railways during the period. Nationalization, Nationalised in 1948, part of the company became known as 23 August Works. The Welsh Highland Heritage Railway is a short reconstructed heritage railway in Gwynedd, Wales. Its main station is in Porthmadog. History The origins of the WHHR lie in a small group of railway enthusiasts, including some disgruntled volunteers from the Festiniog Railway, forming the Welsh Highland Railway Society in 1961, to preserve and rebuild the original Welsh Highland Railway which had operated from 1922 to 1936. Land running alongside the Cambrian Coast line at Beddgelert Siding was acquired from British Railways in December 1972. Work started on construction of the railway in 1973. The South Tynedale Railway is a preserved, Narrow gauge railway, narrow gauge heritage railway in Northern England and at 875ft is England's second highest narrow gauge railway after the Lynton and Barnstaple Railway in north Devon. The Great Whipsnade Railway, also known as The Jumbo Express, is an English, narrow gauge heritage railway that operates within ZSL Whipsnade Zoo in Bedfordshire, England. Overview Construction of the railway started in 1970 and the initial line opened on 26 August 1970. The line provided rides within the animal enclosures and an additional attraction in its own right. Originally called the Whipsnade and Umfolozi Railway, it began as a short line running from near the children's zoo. It was later extended to form a loop through several paddocks. The Třemešná ve Slezsku – Osoblaha Railway is a narrow-gauge railway connecting Třemešná on the Krnov–Głuchołazy line with Osoblaha on the Czech-Polish border. It is one of the three remaining narrow gauge railway lines with regular passenger traffic in the Czech Republic and the last one operated by the state-owned railway company České dráhy. History In the 1870s the owners of a sugar refinery in Osoblaha were looking for a railway connection of their town. From a financial point of view, the best alternative was a connection to the railway network in neighbouring Prussia. However, the government in Vienna refused it on political and military grounds.
