Pádraig Conneely
Pádraig Conneely is an Irish Fine Gael party politician. He was Mayor of Galway from 2008 to 2009, where he was known as "the maverick mayor". Biography Conneely was elected to Galway Corporation in 2002 and proved a divisive figure, frequently at the centre of contentious and personal attacks on city officials, that caused council meetings to be prolonged for hours or end in impasse. His reputation led to his being dubbed ''the maverick mayor'' upon his election in 2008. Fine Gael (, ; English: "Family (or Tribe) of the Irish") is a liberal-conservative and Christian-democratic political party in Ireland. Fine Gael is currently the third-largest party in the Republic of Ireland in terms of members of Dáil Éireann and largest in terms of Irish members of the European Parliament. The ''Cork Independent'' is a free newspaper in Cork, Ireland. The paper is published weekly and contains local news, health and beauty, business, opinion, social events, entertainment, motoring and property as well as input from a number of columnists. The council has jurisdiction throughout its administrative area of the city of Galway which is the largest city in the province of Connacht, in Ireland. The current mayor is Clodagh Higgins, ( FG). Election to the office The Mayor is elected to office annually by Councillors of Galway City Council from amongst its members. There is no popular vote. Up to 1841, Mayors were elected in August and took office in September. There was a strong tradition of festivities to mark this start of a new municipal year. Volvo Ocean Race
The Ocean Race is a yacht race around the world, held every three or four years since 1973. Originally named the Whitbread Round the World Race after its initiating sponsor, British brewing company Whitbread, in 2001 it became the Volvo Ocean Race after Swedish automobile manufacturer Volvo took up the sponsorship, and in 2019 it was renamed The Ocean Race. Though the route changes to accommodate various ports of call, the race typically departs Europe in October, and in recent editions has had either 9 or 10 legs, with in-port races at many of the stopover cities. Declan McDonnell
Declan McDonnell (born 1948) is an independent politician in Ireland, having previously been a member of the Progressive Democrats. He was elected in June 2009 as Mayor of Galway, He had held the office from 1999 to 2000. Biography He was born in 1948 in Galway to Paddy McDonnell of Moore Street, Loughrea; and Kay Kelly of Woodford. He was the eldest of four children. His parents had moved to Galway in 1846. He is by profession an accountant and a management consultant of over forty years experience. He married Mary Long of Mervue in 1972 and their children are Jeannette, Noel, Marie, Brian. Donal Lyons
Donal Lyons was the Mayor of Galway from 2001–02 and from 2014–15. Biography Lyons is a native of Castlebaldwin, County Sligo, but moved to Galway in the 1970s where he married Myra Mulveen of Shantalla, with whom he had Ciara and Aiblhe. A trade unionist, he joined the Progressive Democrats in 1986. He was co-opted to the Corporation in 1996 following the resignation of Liam Madden. In 1999 Lyons and his colleague, Paul Colleran, won two seats in the South Ward.
