Public Opinion Of The 2006 Thai Coup D'état
Public opinion of the 2006 Thailand coup d'état was diverse. An initial public opinion poll showed support for the coup, although the CDRM, junta banned subsequent polls. Bangkok residents displayed kindness to soldiers who had seized control of key positions. The response of activists and academics was mixed, and ranged from support for the junta to harsh condemnations. Several public protests against the coup were organized, despite junta ban on demonstrations. In subsequent weeks, condemnation of the coup transformed into criticism of the junta-appointed government of Surayud Chulanont. Public opinion poll On Wednesday, 20 September 2006, Suan Dusit Rajabhat University published the result of a poll of 2,019 people. Pasuk Pongpaijitr
Pasuk Phongpaichit ( th, ผาสุก พงษ์ไพจิตร, , born 11 February 1946) is a Thai economist. A professor at Chulalongkorn University, she is the author of several books on corruption in Thailand. Pasuk earned BA and MA degrees in economics at Monash University in Australia, and received her PhD at Cambridge University in England. Her books include ''A History of Thailand'', ''Thaksin: The Business of Politics in Thailand'', and ''Thailand's Crisis'' (with Chris Baker), and ''Guns, Girls, Gambling, Ganja'' (with Sungsidh Piriyarangsan and Nualnoi Treerat). A critic of former Premier Thaksin Shinawatra, she was appointed an advisor to the military junta that overthrew his government, but declined the position. Siam Paragon ( th, สยามพารากอน) is a shopping mall in Bangkok, Thailand. It is one of the largest malls in Thailand, along with IconSiam, CentralWorld and CentralPlaza WestGate. The 19 September Network against Coup d'État is a Thai activist group organized to protest the 2006 Thailand coup d'état. According to Sombat Ngamboon-anong, who registered the 19sep.org domain, The Network's website, 19sept.org was shut down by the hosting service on orders of the Thai Information and Communications Technology Ministry. The group organized a petition signing at the Siam Paragon shopping center in Bangkok at 18.00 Friday 22 September 2006. Hunger Strike
A hunger strike is a method of non-violent resistance in which participants fast as an act of political protest, or to provoke a feeling of guilt in others, usually with the objective to achieve a specific goal, such as a policy change. Most hunger strikers will take liquids but not solid food. In cases where an entity (usually the state) has or is able to obtain custody of the hunger striker (such as a prisoner), the hunger strike is often terminated by the custodial entity through the use of force-feeding. Early history Fasting was used as a method of protesting injustice in pre-Christian Ireland, where it was known as ''Troscadh'' or ''Cealachan''. The Democracy Monument ( th, อนุสาวรีย์ประชาธิปไตย, ''Anusawari Prachathipatai'') is a public monument in the city center of Bangkok, capital of Thailand. It occupies a traffic circle on the wide east–west Ratchadamnoen Avenue, at the intersection of Dinso Road. Chalard Worachat
Chalard Worachat ( th, ฉลาด วรฉัตร 31 July 1943 – 12 December 2021) was a Thai politician and activist. He was a member of parliament for the Democrat Party from 1979 to 1983 and 1986 to 1987. His 1992 hunger strike helped bring down the military-backed government of Suchinda Kraprayoon in the Black May. His 1994 hunger strike forced the government of Chuan Leekpai to establish a committee to amend the constitution of Thailand. Following the 2006 Thailand coup d'état, he was arrested by military troops for protesting. In the wake of the 2014 Thai coup d'état, the 71-year-old was back living on water and honey, due to another hunger strike protest by him.
