Public Square Historic District (Scottsboro, Alabama)
The Public Square Historic District is a historic district in Scottsboro, Alabama. Although Scottsboro had been the county seat of Jackson County since 1870, the town's earliest commercial development was centered on the Memphis and Charleston Railroad line, one block north of the square. After an 1881 fire along the rail line, some businesses began to rebuild around the square. Once the Tennessee Valley Authority brought prosperity to the region in the 1930s, development around the courthouse began to accelerate. The current Jackson County Courthouse was built in 1912 with matching Classical Revival porticos on two sides. Commercial buildings around the square are one or two stories and all of brick. The Public Square Historic District in Sigourney, Iowa, United States is a historic district that was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1999. The listing included 41 contributing buildings, a contributing structure, and two contributing objects. The district includes work by architects Wetherell & Gage. The district largely includes commercial buildings that surround the 1911 Keokuk County Courthouse, which is separately listed on the National Register. The Public Square Historic District is a Historic District that serves as an open mall in the center of Watertown, New York, containing 58 buildings, one contributing site, and three contributing objects. The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on September 7, 1984. Description The square is rectangular in shape. Buildings line all four sides of the square, while a large oval park sits in its center. A one-way traffic pattern circles the park. Seven of Watertown's main streets (including U.S. Route 11, New York State Route 3, New York State Route 12, and New York State Route 283) intersect at the square, making it a heavy traffic destination for motorists.
