Pub (Denzil Album)
''Pub'' is the only album by the British band Denzil, released in 1994. Critical reception ''Billboard'' praised the "clever" lyrics and "charmingly rough-edged" singing. ''The Washington Post'' declared that "every one of the 16 songs on ''Pub'' boasts an ear-catching melody driven by an energetic, economical rhythm section." Ira Robbins of ''Trouser Press'' found Denzil to be "a welcome entrant in the English furrow between early Elvis Costello and late Richard Thompson", praising the "memorable tunes ... tastefully backed by an electric trio". In a retrospective review for AllMusic, Andy Hinds gave the album a positive review and stated, "Based around Denzil's everyman voice and workmanlike acoustic guitar, the well-recorded tunes are usually augmented by drums, bass, jangly electric guitar, and other well-chosen instruments. Denzil is an English rock/power pop band from Bournemouth, England, based around singer-songwriter Denzil Thomas. Denzil signed to Giant Records in the US in 1993 and put out one album, ''Pub'', in 1994. History Denzil was formed in Bournemouth in 1990 by singer/songwriter Denzil Thomas. Thomas had been playing at folk clubs for about a year when he met producer/bassist Steve Ennever at a Bournemouth studio. In 1990, they produced a cassette called ''A Tape Called Denzil.'' They formed a band and played their first show in September 1990. Over the next year or so, Denzil played UK shows, first picking up alternating drummers Andy Place and Jeremy Stacey and later finding guitarist Craig Boyd in nearby Portsmouth. In 1992, the band attracted the attention of former William Morris Agency and Famous Music A&R Michael LeShay. Giant Records was launched in 1990 as a joint venture between Warner Bros. Records and record executive Irving Azoff. Currently, this name is used as a Swedish label owned by Warner Music Sweden, a Swedish branch of Warner Music Group. In 1990, Giant became a subsidiary label for Warner Music Group. ''Trouser Press'' was a rock and roll magazine started in New York in 1974 as a mimeographed fanzine by editor/publisher Ira Robbins, fellow fan of the Who Dave Schulps and Karen Rose under the name "Trans-Oceanic Trouser Press" (a reference to a song by the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band and an acronymic play on the British TV show ''Top of the Pops)''. Richard Thompson (musician)
Richard Thompson (born 3 April 1949) is an English singer, songwriter, and guitarist. Thompson first gained prominence in the late 1960s as the lead guitarist and songwriter for the folk rock group Fairport Convention, which he had co-founded in 1967. After departing the group in 1971, Thompson released his debut solo album ''Henry the Human Fly'' in 1972. The next year, he formed a duo with his then-wife Linda Thompson, which produced six albums, including the critically acclaimed ''I Want to See the Bright Lights Tonight'' (1974) and ''Shoot Out the Lights'' (1982).
