The Psychoanalytic Center of California (PCC) is a psychoanalytic institute in Los Angeles, California, that emphasizes psychoanalytic approaches based on the work of Melanie Klein, Wilfred Bion, the British Object Relations School, and other theorists in the Kleinian traditions. It is affiliated with the International Psychoanalytic Association and has been recognized as a component society since 1993. History Psychoanalytic study groups in Southern California date back to the 1920s, some in association with the California Psychoanalytic Society, based in San Francisco, later the San Francisco Psychoanalytic Society and Institute. James Gooch (psychoanalyst)
James Gooch (2 November 1934 – 4 April 2020) was an American psychiatrist and psychoanalyst influential in promoting the ideas of Melanie Klein, Wilfred Bion (with whom he trained), and the British Object Relations theorists in Southern California in the 1980s and 1990s. He was chair of the Department of Psychoanalysis at the California Graduate Institute, an independent professional school for psychologists, and during 1984-1990 he was founding president of the Psychoanalytic Center of California (PCC), a Kleinian-oriented psychoanalytic institute in Los Angeles. He was also a founding member of The Confederation of Independent Psychoanalytic Societies and served for eight years as the North American Representative to the Board of the IPA International Psychoanalytic Association. James Grotstein
James S. Grotstein (November 8, 1925, Ohio – May 30, 2015, Los Angeles, California) was a psychiatrist and psychoanalyst, known for his role in the popularization and explication of the work of Melanie Klein and Wilfred Bion. Among other topics, he expanded on Klein's notions of the paranoid-schizoid and depressive positions. His roles in psychoanalytic organizations included serving as North American Vice President of the International Psychoanalytical Association (IPA), and on the editorial board of the International Journal of Psychoanalysis (IJP). Grotstein served as a hospital corpsman in the U.S. Navy during the Second World War. He earned his B.S. from the University of Akron in 1948 and his M.D. from Western Reserve University (later Case Western Reserve University) in 1952. The California Graduate Institute (CGI) was founded in 1968 as an independent graduate school specializing in psychology, marital and family therapy, and psychoanalysis. CGI and The Chicago School of Professional Psychology formally announced in fall 2008 that they were uniting. The merger was approved by The Chicago School’s accrediting body, the Higher Learning Commission (HLC), in October 2008. HLC joins the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) as two of six regional associations that accredit public and private schools, colleges, and universities in the United States.
