Psilocybe Natalensis
''Psilocybe natalensis'' is a species of psilocybin mushroom in the family Hymenogastraceae. It is found in South Africa. The specific epithet refers to its type locality in Natal. The species was described as new to science in 1995 by Jochen Gartz, Derek Reid, Michael Smith, and Albert Eicker. It is very closely related to Psilocybe cubensis, and differs in its habitat preference, less persistent annulus and genetic sequence. Hymenogastraceae
The Hymenogastraceae is a family of fungi in the order Agaricales with both agaric and false-truffle shaped fruitbodies. Formerly, prior to molecular analyses, the family was restricted to the false-truffle genera. The mushroom genus ''Psilocybe'' in the ''Hymenogastraceae'' is now restricted to the hallucinogenic species while nonhallucinogenic former species are largely in the genus ''Deconica'' classified in the Strophariaceae. Derek Reid
Derek Agutter Reid (2 September 1927 – 18 January 2006) was an England, English mycology, mycologist. Background and education Reid was born in Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire, the son of a picture-framer. He was educated at Cedars School and the University of Hull, where he studied geology and botany. He gained his PhD from the University of London in 1964, for a thesis (later published) on Podoscyphaceae, stipitate stereoid fungi. Mycological career and travels In 1951, he became assistant to Dr R.W.G. Dennis, head of mycology at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. On his retirement in 1975, Derek Reid took over his position and remained at Kew till his own retirement in 1987. ''Psilocybe'' ( ) is a genus of gilled mushrooms, growing worldwide, in the family Hymenogastraceae. Most or nearly all species contain the psychedelic compounds psilocybin and psilocin. Taxonomy Taxonomic history A 2002 study of the molecular phylogeny of the agarics indicated that the genus ''Psilocybe'' as then defined was polyphyletic, falling into two distinct clades that are not directly related to each other. The blue-staining hallucinogenic species constituted one clade and the non-bluing species the other. The previous type species of the genus, ''Psilocybe '' (now Deconica montana), was in the non-bluing clade, but in 2010 the type species was changed to '' P. semilanceata'', a member of the bluing clade.
