The enzyme protein-glutamate methylesterase (EC 3.1.1.61) catalyzes the reaction :protein L-glutamate ''O'' 5-methyl ester + H2O \rightleftharpoons protein L-glutamate + methanol This enzyme is a demethylase, and more specifically it belongs to the family of hydrolases, specifically those acting on carboxylic ester bonds. The systematic name is protein-Lglutamate-''O'' 5-methyl-ester acylhydrolase. In molecular biology, a protein domain is a region of a protein's polypeptide chain that is self-stabilizing and that folds independently from the rest. Each domain forms a compact folded three-dimensional structure. Many proteins consist of several domains, and a domain may appear in a variety of different proteins. The N-terminus (also known as the amino-terminus, NH2-terminus, N-terminal end or amine-terminus) is the start of a protein or polypeptide, referring to the free amine group (-NH2) located at the end of a polypeptide.
