In 2012 it was estimated that there were between 40 and 42 million prostitutes in the world. The list of countries below provides an estimate for the number of people working as prostitutes in each country. China, India, and the United States are the countries with the most prostitutes. Methodology There are a number of difficulties involved in collecting meaningful prostitution statistics. For example, the greater visibility of some forms of prostitution, such as street prostitution, makes statistics on these forms easier to collect. However, in some countries street prostitution forms a much smaller part of the sex industry than indoor prostitution. Similarly sex workers with health, addiction and other support needs are more likely to be known to the authorities and hence easier for researchers to contact, but may not be representative of prostitution as a whole. Street prostitution is a form of sex work in which a sex worker solicits customers from a public place, most commonly a street, while waiting at street corners or walking alongside a street, but also other public places such as parks, benches, etc. The street prostitute is often dressed in a provocative manner. The sex act may be performed in the customer's car, in a nearby secluded street location, or at the prostitute's residence or in a rented motel room. Legality Street prostitution is often illegal, even in jurisdictions that allow other forms of prostitution. UK Network Of Sex Work Projects
UK Network of Sex Work Projects (UKNSWP) is an umbrella organisation that represents sex work projects in the UK, both agencies or individuals working with sex workers. It facilitates networking between those it represents, so as to share good practice about providing quality support services for sex workers. It is a charity based in Manchester. In July 2012 UKNSWP launched the National Ugly Mugs (NUM) scheme, a third party reporting system for sex workers that issues alerts to sex workers via their smartphone, and feeds intelligence to police, aiming to reduce offending by dangerous serial sexual offenders. It was one of five winners of the Guardian Charity Awards 2014. Under-reporting usually refers to some issue, incident, statistic, etc., that individuals, responsible agencies, or news media have not reported, or have reported as less than the actual level or amount.
