Promises, Promises (musical)
''Promises, Promises'' is a musical with music by Burt Bacharach, lyrics by Hal David and a book by Neil Simon. It is based on the 1960 film ''The Apartment'' written by Billy Wilder and I. A. L. Diamond. The story concerns a junior executive at an insurance company who seeks to climb the corporate ladder by allowing his apartment to be used by his married superiors for trysts. The musical premiered in 1968 on Broadway with choreography by Michael Bennett and direction by Robert Moore. It starred Jerry Orbach as Chuck Baxter and Jill O'Hara as Fran Kubelik. It closed after 1,281 performances. A West End production opened in 1969 featuring Tony Roberts and Betty Buckley. The cast album was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album, and two songs from the show (the title tune and "I'll Never Fall in Love Again") became hit singles for Dionne Warwick. ''You've Got to Laugh'' is the seventh studio album by Nik Kershaw, released on 26 October 2006 under his own record label. The series was created by Addie Swartz and initially published by B*tween Productions, then licensed by Simon & Schuster. Author "Annie Bryant" is a pseudonym for a group of writers who wrote the Beacon Street Girls books. The series was edited by Roberta MacPhee. Promises, Promises is the second studio album by New Zealand punk rock band Die! Die! Die!. Background and release ''Promises, Promises'' was produced by Shayne Carter (Straitjacket Fits, Dimmer). The album was engineered by Kevin McMahoon and mastered by Howie Weinberg at Masterdisk. The cover art was designed and hand sewn by Mark Rutledge. It was released on 5 February 2008 via Tardus in New Zealand and via SAF records in the US and Canada. Critical reception ''Promises, Promises'' was well received by music journalists. Metacritic, a site which provides a normalised rating out of 100 based on reviews from critics, gives the album a score of 78. Promises, Promises (Naked Eyes Song)
"Promises, Promises" was the second hit single for the British new wave group Naked Eyes in 1983. The song went on to become a top-20 hit in the US that October, peaking at number 11 on the ''Billboard'' Hot 100 singles chart, albeit after it was re-recorded with some lyrics different from the original UK single. It was their follow up to their earlier hit "Always Something There to Remind Me" by Burt Bacharach and Hal David, which was a top-ten hit in the U.S. in mid-1983. (Although Bacharach and David had also written a song titled "Promises, Promises" for the musical of the same name, the Naked Eyes song was an original song written by the band members, Pete Byrne and Rob Fisher.)
