Prognathodes Marcellae
''Prognathodes'' is a genus of butterflyfish in the family Chaetodontidae. They are found at rocky reefs in tropical oceans around the world and are mainly found deeper than ''Chaetodon''; often a depths below those possible in normal scuba diving. In the past they were commonly included in the genus ''Chaetodon''. They are whitish, yellow, black and dark brown, and reach in length. Theodore Nicholas Gill
Theodore Nicholas Gill (March 21, 1837 – September 25, 1914) was an American ichthyologist, mammalogist, malacologist and librarian. Career Born and educated in New York City under private tutors, Gill early showed interest in natural history. He was associated with J. Carson Brevoort in the arrangement of the latter's entomological and ichthyological collections before going to Washington D.C. in 1863 to work at the Smithsonian Institution. He catalogued mammals, fishes and mollusks most particularly although maintaining proficiency in other orders of animals. He was librarian at the Smithsonian and also senior assistant to the Library of Congress. He was elected as a member of the American Philosophical Society in 1867. Gill was professor of zoology at George Washington University. He was also a member of the Megatherium Club at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. ''Prognathodes carlhubbsi'', the southern scythemarked butterflyfish or southern scythe butterflyfish, is a species of butterflyfish found at rocky reefs in the tropical Eastern Pacific, where found at depths of at the Galápagos Islands, Cocos Island, Malpelo Island, and off northwestern Peru.Hooker, Y. John Ernest Randall
John Ernest "Jack" Randall (May 22, 1924 – April 26, 2020) was an American ichthyologist and a leading authority on coral reef fishes. Randall described over 800 species and authored 11 books and over 900 scientific papers and popular articles. He spent most of his career working in Hawaii. He died in April 2020 at the age of 95. Brian Randolph Greene (born February 9, 1962) is an American theoretical physicist and mathematician. Greene was a physics professor at Cornell University from 19901995, and has been a professor at Columbia University since 1996 and chairman of the World Science Festival since co-founding it in 2008. Greene has worked on mirror symmetry, relating two different Calabi–Yau manifolds (concretely relating the conifold to one of its orbifolds). He also described the flop transition, a mild form of topology change, showing that topology in string theory can change at the conifold point. Richard Lawrence Pyle, Ph.D. (born 24 March 1967) is a scuba diver and ichthyologist working on Hawaii. Pyle discovered the principle of " Pyle stops" when decompressing from many deep dives in search of new species of fish, and has identified hundreds of new species. He is the author of over 130 publications. In October 2015, he won second prize, an award of €5,000, in the GBIF Ebbe Nielsen Challenge, a Global Biodiversity Information Facility competition, for BioGUID.org, "a web service that crosslinks identifiers linked to data objects in the biodiversity realm". Andreas Buchwald Rechnitzer
Andreas Buchwald Rechnitzer (November 30, 1924 - August 22, 2005) was an American oceanographer. With Carl Hubbs, he discovered the striped yellow butterfly fish that served as the logo of the Birch Aquarium. He helped develop the first SCUBA diving training program for ocean scientists, which included such innovations as ditch-and-don, buddy breathing, and the buddy system. He was a member of the US Navy Office of Naval Research team that negotiated the purchase of the bathyscape ''Trieste'', and was the scientist in charge of Project Nekton in 1960, during which the ''Trieste'' entered the Challenger Deep, the deepest surveyed point in the world's oceans. For this he received the Navy Distinguished Civilian Service Award. Carl Leavitt Hubbs
Carl Leavitt Hubbs (October 19, 1894 – June 30, 1979) was an American ichthyologist. Biography Youth He was born in Williams, Arizona. He was the son of Charles Leavitt and Elizabeth (née Goss) Hubbs. His father had a wide variety of jobs (farmer, iron mine owner, newspaper owner). The family moved several times before settling in San Diego where he got his first taste of natural history. After his parents divorced in 1907, he lived with his mother, who opened a private school in Redondo Beach, California. His maternal grandmother Jane Goble Goss, one of the first female doctors, showed Hubbs how to harvest shellfish and other sea creatures.
