Private Angelo (film)
''Private Angelo'' is a 1949 British comedy war film directed by Michael Anderson and Peter Ustinov and starring Ustinov, Godfrey Tearle, María Denis and Marjorie Rhodes. It depicts the misadventures of a soldier in the Italian Army during the Second World War. It was adapted from the 1946 novel '' Private Angelo'' by Eric Linklater. The film's costumes were designed by Ustinov's mother Nadia Benois. A number of scenes were filmed in the Italian village of Trequanda in the Province of Siena. It also featured music played by the Società Filarmonica di Trequanda. Interiors were shot at Welwyn Studios, with sets designed by the art director John Howell. Michael Anderson (director)
Michael Joseph Anderson (30 January 1920 – 25 April 2018) was an English film director, best known for directing the World War II film '' The Dam Busters'' (1955), the epic ''Around the World in 80 Days'' (1956) and the dystopian sci-fi film ''Logan's Run'' (1976). Early life and education Anderson was born in London, United Kingdom, to a theatrical family. His parents were the actors Lawrence (1893–1939) and Beatrice Anderson (1893–1977). His great-aunt was Mary Anderson of Louisville, Kentucky, who became one of the first US Shakespearean actresses; the Mary Anderson Theatre in Louisville was dedicated to her. He began working in the industry as an actor during the 1930s. By 1938, he had graduated to working behind the camera as an assistant director. John Harvey (actor)
John Harvey (27 September 1911 – 19 July 1982) was an English actor. He appeared in 52 films, two television films and made 70 television guest appearances between 1948 and 1979. Born in London, England, he began his acting career on the stage in the 1930s as one of the Harry Hanson's Court Players at the Peterborough Repertory. While there, he met the actress Diana King. Harvey and King were married, remaining together for more than forty years, until his death. During the Second World War, he was commissioned in the Royal Air Force. Post-war, he performed at the Theatre Royal in Drury Lane, London, for some six years, during the entire West End runs of Rodgers and Hammerstein's '' South Pacific'' and ''The King and I''. Harvey's film debut was in the role as Eddie in the British crime drama ''A Gunman Has Escaped'' (1948), in which he was the leading star. Wilfred William Dennis Shine (20 October 1911 – 24 July 1997) was a British theatre, film and television actor. Shine was born into a family of theatre actors; among others, Shine's father, mother, grandmother, two uncles and an aunt had worked in theatre.Benedick, Adam ''The Independent'', 14 August 1997. Harry Locke
Harry Locke (10 December 1913 – 7 September 1987) was an English character actor. He was born and died in London. He married Joan Cowderoy in 1943 and Cordelia Sewell in 1952. He was a good friend of the poet Dylan Thomas. Their friendship in London and South Leigh, Oxfordshire, has been described by Locke in a 1970s interview with the radio journalist Colin Edwards. William Henry Mettam "Robin" Bailey (5 October 1919 – 14 January 1999) was an English actor. He was born in Hucknall, Nottinghamshire. Often cast in upper class and tradition-bound roles such as Mr Justice Graves in Thames Television's ''Rumpole of the Bailey'', Bailey is also known for his portrayal of Uncle Mort in '' I Didn't Know You Cared'', the BBC's adaptation of Peter Tinniswood's stories about an extended Yorkshire family. Moyna Macgill (born Charlotte Lillian McIldowie; 10 December 1895 – 25 November 1975) was an Irish actress from Belfast and the mother of actress Angela Lansbury and producers Edgar and Bruce Lansbury. In 2020, she was listed at number 35 on The Irish Times list of Ireland's greatest film actors. Early life Born Charlotte Lillian McIldowie at 42 Eglantine Avenue in south Belfast, she was the daughter of William McIldowie and Elizabeth Jane (née Mageean). Her father was a wealthy solicitor of Scottish parentage who was a director of the Grand Opera House in Belfast, a position that sparked her interest in theatrics.
