Princess Maria of Romania ( ro, Prinţesa Maria a României; 8 September 18709 April 1874) was the only child of Prince (later King) Carol I of Romania and his wife, Elisabeth of Wied. Life Princess Maria was born in Bucharest as the first Princess of Romania that was also of the House of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen, on . After a month, in , she was baptised as a Romanian Orthodox at the monastery of Cotroceni (near the site of the present-day Cotroceni Palace). In her family, the young princess was nicknamed "''Mariechen''" (a possible homage to her parents' German heritage) or "''Itty''" (derived from little). Wilhelm (Given names: ''Georg Wilhelm August Heinrich Belgicus''; 14 June 1792, Kirchheimbolanden – 20/30 August 1839, Bad Kissingen) was joint sovereign Duke of Nassau, along with his father's cousin Frederick Augustus, reigning from 1816 until 1839. Wied-Neuwied was a German statelet in northeastern Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, located northeast of the Rhine River flanking the northern side of the city of Neuwied. Wied-Neuwied emerged from the partitioning of Wied. Its status was elevated from county to principality in 1784. It was mediatised to Nassau and Prussia in 1806. Karl, Prince of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen (20 February 1785 – 11 March 1853) was the reigning Prince of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen from 1831 to 1848. In 1833, Karl summoned a constitutional assembly (''Landtag'') and promulgated a constitutional charter as the law in his lands. He founded a hospital for his subjects, and had the ''Ständehaus'' built on the modern ''Leopoldsplatz'' in Sigmaringen (today owned by the Hohenzollerische Landesbank). Elisabeta Palace () is a palace on Kiseleff Road in Bucharest, Romania. Built in 1936, it is the official residence in Romania of Margareta of Romania, her husband Prince Radu, and her sister Princess Maria. The Palace was designed in 1930 by the architect Duiliu Marcu and built in 1936 for Princess Elisabeth, the daughter of King Ferdinand I and his wife Queen Marie, and also the aunt of King Michael I, who was forced to abdicate on 30 December 1947.
