Pretenders (TV Series)
''Pretenders'' was a 13 episode British historical adventure television series produced by Harlech Television (HTV) and broadcast from 27 February to 21 May 1972 on ITV. It was filmed in Somerset, England and Wales. The series takes place in 1685 and is set against the backdrop of the Monmouth Rebellion against the Catholic King James II of England. It starred Frederick Jaeger as Joachim, a German mercenary who assists Elam ( Curtis Arden), a 13-year-old boy who believes that he is the illegitimate son of the Duke of Monmouth, who in turn is the illegitimate son of James II's Protestant elder brother Charles II of England and therefore claims to be the rightful heir to the throne. The series followed their various adventures, leading up to the climactic Battle of Sedgemoor, the last pitched battle on English soil. Frederick Jaeger
Manfred Frederick Jaeger (9 May 1928 – 18 June 2004) was a German-born British film, television, theatre and radio character actor. Biography Jaeger was born in Berlin, Germany, but moved to England following Adolf Hitler's rise to power. He was educated at Lord Weymouth's Grammar School, Warminster, and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, from which he graduated in 1948, becoming a British subject two years later. He made his first theatre appearance in 1949, and his film debut, ''The Black Tent'', in 1956. He went on to make further film, television and radio appearances until retiring in 1996. He died in June 2004 aged 76. He is well remembered by fans of the science fiction series ''Doctor Who'' for his roles in three serials. He appeared as Jano in '' The Savages'' in 1966, and as Professor Sorenson in ''Planet of Evil'' in 1975. Battle Of Sedgemoor
The Battle of Sedgemoor was the last and decisive engagement between the Kingdom of England and rebels led by the Duke of Monmouth during the Monmouth rebellion, fought on 6 July 1685, and took place at Westonzoyland near Bridgwater in Somerset, England, resulting in a victory for the English army. It was the final battle of the Monmouth Rebellion and followed a series of skirmishes around south-west England between the rebel forces of the Duke of Monmouth, and the Royal Army still loyal to James II. Victory went to the Government and about 500 prisoners fell into their hands. Monmouth escaped from the battlefield but was captured, taken to London and executed nine days later. Many of Monmouth's supporters were tried during the Bloody Assizes. Many were transported abroad, while others were executed by drawing and quartering. Charles II (29 May 1630 – 6 February 1685) was King of Scotland from 1649 until 1651, and King of England, Scotland and Ireland from the 1660 Restoration of the monarchy until his death in 1685. Leonard White (producer)
Leonard White (5 November 1916 – 2 January 2016) was a British actor and television producer. In the latter role he was responsible for '' The Avengers'' and ''Armchair Theatre''. Early life White was born in Newhaven, East Sussex. His father was a bookmaker and racehorse owner, and his mother ran a wholesale newsagents business. He was introduced to acting by the headmaster of his school, who ran a boys' Shakespearean acting troupe. Career After leaving school, White pursued a career as a stage actor in London. Initially, he supported himself with a clerical job while performing with the Tavistock Repertory Company (now the Tower Theatre Company).
