Presses De La Cité
Presses de la Cité is a French publishing company founded in 1943 by Sven Nielsen, the son and grandson of booksellers, who came to Paris in 1924. Before becoming a publisher, Nielsen specialised in exporting French books. In 1988, with its merger with Larousse-Nathan, Groupe de La Cité became the second-largest publishing company in France and the tenth-largest in the world. It was acquired by Vivendi Universal Publishing and is now part of Editis. History Having first specialised in translating American novels, Presses de la Cité first published home-produced work in 1946 with by Georges Simenon, which became the first part of his novel ''Pedigree''. At a rate of three or four books a year, Presses de la Cité published 140 of Simenon's novels and collections. Sven Nielsen (French Publisher)
Sven Nielsen (18 March 1883 – 21 January 1958) was a Norwegian politician for the Conservative Party of Norway, Conservative Party. He was elected to the Storting, Norwegian Parliament from the Market towns of Vest-Agder and Rogaland counties in 1934, and was re-elected on three occasions. Between 9 March and 25 June 1945 he was appointed Minister of Trade, Shipping, Industry, Crafts and Fisheries. Born in Stavanger, Nielsen was a member of Harstad city council from 1919 to 1922, and then served as mayor from 1922 to 1925. He later held various positions in Stavanger city council from 1934 to 1947, except for a period between 1940 and 1945 during the German occupation of Norway. Having graduated as cand.philos. 1903, he worked as a teacher and CEO. He also reached the rank of Major (rank), major in the Norwegian Army, and from 1941 to 1945, during the German occupation of Norway, he directed the Office of the Auditor General of Norway-in-exile in London. Konsalik
Heinz G. Konsalik, pseudonym of Heinz Günther (28 May 1921 – 2 October 1999) was a German novelist. Konsalik was his mother's maiden name. During the Second World War he was a war correspondent, which provided many experiences for his novels. Many of his books deal with war and showed the German human side of things as experienced by their soldiers and families at home, for instance ''Das geschenkte Gesicht'' (The bestowed face) which deals with a German soldier's recovery after his sledge ran over an anti-personnel mine and destroyed his face, and how this affected his relationship with his wife at home. It places no judgment on the German position in the war and simply deals with human beings in often desperate situations, doing what they were forced to do under German military law. Éditions Julliard
Éditions Julliard is a French publishing house. It was founded in 1942 by René Julliard. Julliard was known as a discoverer and publisher of talents, in particular Françoise Sagan and Jean d'Ormesson. After Julliard's death in July 1962, the managing director, Christian Bourgois, took over the publishing house. Éditions Julliard was soon repurchased by the publishing house Presses de la Cité. Christian Bourgois created his own publishing house in 1966. In 1953, André Frank and Jean-Louis Barrault created the review of the Renaud-Barrault books (''Les Cahiers Renaud-Barrault''), published at Éditions Julliard until Julliard's death, then at Éditions Gallimard. Plon is a French book publishing company, founded in 1852 by Henri Plon and his two brothers. The Plon family were Walloons coming from Nivelles, Belgium. One of their ancestors is probably the Danish typographer Jehan Plon who lived at the end of the 16th century. History The ''Éditions Plon'' were created in 1852, by Henri Plon and his two brothers. They were given the title of ''Imprimeur de l’Empereur'' (Imperial publisher) and published the correspondence of Louis XIII of France, Marie Antoinette and Napoleon I of France. During the 1920s the house published the novels of the Jewish-Algerian writer Elissa Rhaïs. Plon published Quid, an encyclopedia, from 1963 to 1974.
