President Of The Supreme Court Of Israel
The President of the Supreme Court of Israel is one of the judges of the Supreme Court of Israel, who serves as head of the body, and as result has a significant impact on the judiciary system in Israel. The previous president, Esther Hayut, retired on 15 October 2023. As a successor was not selected, Deputy President Uzi Vogelman is serving as acting President of the Supreme Court. Selection Process In accordance with section 4(a) of the Basic Law: The Judiciary, the president of the Supreme Court is appointed by the President of Israel, according to the recommendation of the Judicial Selection Committee. By convention, the selection is made in order of seniority, by which the longest-serving judge is designated when the outgoing president completes his or her term. Uzi Vogelman
Uzi Vogelman (; born October 6, 1954) is a current justice in the Supreme Court of Israel. Vogelman was born in Tel Aviv. After serving in the Israel Defense Forces, he studied law at Tel Aviv University. He earned an LLB and was admitted to the Israel Bar Association in 1980. He then earned an LLM from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in 1985 and a Master of Public Administration from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University in 1990. Vogelman served as an attorney in the State Attorney's office from 1982 to 1995, first in the Criminal Division and High Court of Justice Division, then as Deputy and Senior Deputy to the State Attorney. Yitzhak Olshan
Yitzhak Olshan ( he, יצחק אולשן, February 19, 1895 – February 5, 1983) was an Israeli jurist and the second President of the Supreme Court of Israel from 1954 to 1965. Biography Olshan was born in Kaunas in the Russian Empire (now Lithuania) in 1895 and immigrated to Ottoman Palestine in 1912. He joined the Hagana and the Jewish Legion. He studied law and oriental studies at the University of London. As an attorney, he represented the Yishuv before the British Mandate of Palestine authorities. Pinchas Rosen
Pinchas Rosen ( he, פנחס רוזן, born Felix Rosenblüth, 1 May 1887 – 3 May 1978) was an Israeli statesman, and the country's first Minister of Justice, serving three times during 1948–51, 1952–56, and 1956–61. He was also leader of the Independent Liberals during the 1960s. Biography Felix Pinchas Rosenblüth (later Rosen) was born in Berlin, Germany. Ofer Grosskopf (, born 12 October 1969) is an Israeli judge and former law professor who currently serves as a judge on the Supreme Court of Israel. He is the youngest judge in the court, and expected to be its President in 2035-2039. Early life and education Grosskopf was born in Israel in 1969 to Yossi and Ayala Grosskopf, and grew up in Herzliya. Daphne Barak-Erez (; born 2 January 1965) is an Israeli law professor. Since May 2012, she serves as a judge in the Supreme Court of Israel. Personal life Daphne Barak-Erez was born in the United States to Israeli parents, and became a citizen by birthright of the United States. The family later returned to Israel, where she was raised. She studied law at Tel Aviv University as part of the Atuda program, earning LLB, LLM, and PhD degrees, and did postdoctoral research at Harvard University. Noam Sohlberg (born 22 January 1962, ) is an Israeli jurist who serves as a judge on the Supreme Court of Israel. Early life Sohlberg was born and raised in Haifa. His parents, Shaul and Yehudit Sohlberg, were Jewish immigrants from the Netherlands. He attended a religious high school in Haifa, and studied at Yeshivat Har Etzion in Alon Shvut. Miriam Naor
Miriam Naor ( he, מרים נאור) (26 October 1947 – 24 January 2022) was an Israeli judge who was President of the Supreme Court of Israel from January 2015 to October 2017. Dorit Beinisch ( he, דורית ביניש; born February 28, 1942) was the 9th president of the Supreme Court of Israel. Appointed on September 14, 2006, after the retirement of Aharon Barak, she served in this position until February 28, 2012. She was the first woman to serve as president of the Israeli Supreme Court. Aharon Barak ( he, אהרן ברק; born Erik Brick, 16 September 1936) is an Israeli lawyer and jurist who served as President of the Supreme Court of Israel from 1995 to 2006. Yitzhak Kahan ( he, יצחק כהן; November 15, 1913 – April 24, 1985) was President of the Supreme Court of Israel from 1982 until 1983.
